I'm touching myself right now!
I am wondering if putting a router on a broadband conection will slow the speed of the internet can anybody help?

Depends on three major factors:
1. Equipment you're planning to use
2. Distance between router and planned receiver
3. Speed you're hoping for

Generally speaking though, you shouldn't experience any slowdown.

does the number of things running on the router make it any slower

Unless you're planning on using every single port on the device, with each computer being used by different people at the same time.. no.

A router simply routes. It's not like a VCR where the pass-thru picture is degraded from each device added to the chain. If you have a super-fast connection and all the computers are using bandwidth intensive stuff.. like.. oh I dunno, serving files or streaming high-def movies from reel.com or something.. nothing is going to happen.

Now if you actually DO have heavy usage then network collisions and router memory are a concern: Then simply buy a more expensive/better router. Oh, and have fun setting up wireless security if you're going down that route. Ugh I hate wireless. Always a pain copy/pasting WEP keys and neighbor-proofing the setup.

Practically speaking, not really. You'd have to use a whole lot of bandwidth to slow it down.

if i had a router i would connect a pc(ethernet),laptop(wireless)and a ps3(either)

How much bandwidth does a ps3(online gaming) use? and

Does a ps3(downloading) use the same amount of bandwidth as a computer? and

If i was downloading something off either one would it slow down the internet on the other two?

You should be fine with that setup. You'd have to be downloading Gigabytes at a time to see any major reduction in speed, and chances are, you'll never really get there.
