Russia to drill for oil off of the Florida Coast

Well, their assets anyway. :crash:

Russian oil rigs just 45 miles from Florida?
Cuba will allow Russia to look for oil and gas in its territorial waters. Environmentalists cringe, but the industry says its time for the US to look for more oil in the Gulf of Mexico, too.

New York - Remember the Cuba Missile Crisis and the threat of Russian nukes 90 miles from Key West?

Now, there is the possibility of Russian oil rigs even closer, drilling in Cuban waters off the Gulf of Mexico.

Last week, the Cuban government announced it had signed contracts with Russia, allowing Russia to hunt for oil and natural gas in the Gulf of Mexico, perhaps as close as 45 miles from US shores.

Environmental groups say it's a bad idea. But pro-oil drilling organizations think the Cuban proposal should send a message that if other nations are willing to open up their offshore waters, so should the US. And, it's prompted at least one Florida mayor to volunteer to go to Havana to talk about environmental concerns.

"It does present a dilemma for the US," says Wayne Smith, a senior fellow at the Center for International Policy in Washington. "But, as long as it's in Cuba's economic zone, we may not like it but there is little we can do about it."

It may not just be Russian oil rigs heading for the tropics. Mr. Smith, a long time Cuba expert, says the Cubans are also talking to the Chinese and Brazilians.

Boy do we (u.s.s.a.) ever look like a horse's ass these days :o :(

Putin must just think the world of Obama.

Id just like to shove a nice big piece of unlubed wood up all those who want or care about oil and just ass fuck them for about 3 hours until they die of blood loss.

It would seem like that's Cuba's business so unless those rigs come with missiles, what does that have to do with Obama?? Even as such....it should be pretty clear by now that any of these issues are not a supply problem.

Further, you can't drill to keep up with demand if the world stays on a demand curve.

How great would it be if the Russians and Chinese commit their assets to drilling as the biggest consumer of crude cuts it's demand (which is where we're headed).

Where will world technology be in 8 to 12 years when they start to realize product from this investment??

I will point out the other competing economic interest that both the Cubans and just as much Florida who is the one most opposed to drilling off their shores which is "Tourism".

"This prospect has prompted Key West mayor Morgan McPherson to volunteer to go to Havana in the first US-Cuban exchange on the environment.

"I think it's important to create a dialogue," he says.

So far, Mr. McPherson says he has called the State Department who referred him to the Commerce Department who referred him back to the State Department.

"I got the Heisman," he says, referring to the statue of a stiff-armed football player.

However, he says he has heard from the Cubans who think it's a good idea. "Their economy is like our economy – centered around tourism – so they have as much at risk," he says.

But some environmental groups think the risk is too great. "It's hard for me to imagine that drilling that close to Florida's coast won't eventually mean oil spills washing up on Florida's shores," says Cat Lazaroff, a spokeswoman for Defenders of Wildlife in Washington.

Florida's US Senator Bill Nelson (D) and Gov. Charlie Crist (R) had no comment."

States rights is a bitch sometimes ain't it lol.

Why aren't we drilling in Cuba?

1. WHo says there's anything in Cuba to bring to market? Maybe this is just a big F U from Castro?

2. I remember Veep Cheney promising that Iraq's oil revenues would "pay for reconstruction." How's that going, by the way?

3. The basic reason is that our country, both Democratic and Republican Administrations has, for the past 40 years, treated Cuba like a second class piece of shit country through a MEANINGLESS POLITICAL EMBARGO. If we had normalized trade relations years ago, maybe it would be our oil companies working with Cuba....

Then again, I think American Companies pretty much treated Cuba like a piece of shit country back in the 40s and 50s. Cuba became the sexual paradise for the American East Coast Elites. Sort of like a combination of Vegas and Bangkok.

The further away Cuba keeps American businesses, the better for Cuba. :dunno:

Another nothing issue that sounds interesting to wingnuts.

At the heart of the matter, Cuba is allowing some other country to lease areas to explore for oil. :dunno:

Makes one wonder why Cuba hasn't done themselves.;)

I suspect this is a relatively nice size mistake by the Russians and in a few years we should all know why.

If the USA would have accepted Cuba much earlier, they could have got their oil from there maybe since the 80ies.

And since the Cubans have relied on their russian partners since long years, hey, now them get to get that oil.

Don't blame others :2 cents:

The american dilemma shows in many posts here:

The direct connection from communism to being evil, anti-american, etc. is being pushed into the heads of americans since the McCarthy Era at least and now many, if not most inhabitants of the US of A react like Pavlov's Dog to that word.

There is much to do in South America, where much porcellain has been broken through the CIA activities. The door for Russia might open wide there, too.

Change your way of thinking

I'm surprised that any fiscal conservative would have any problem with this whatsoever, to be honest. It was the fiscal conservatives who had no problems with the Dubai Company that wanted to takeover the East Coast ports a couple of years ago....

Conservatives using this issue (Russia drilling for oil near Cuba), lacing it with a dose of FEAR, flogging the Fox airwaves, riling up "the heartland," all to basically resurrect Drill Baby Drill seems very specious to me....

At least until ...

And the economic indicators are starting to go positive at long last. Even Fox News admits it....albeit with a caveat of course:

This story is back-page news to say the least.
At least until the dollar tanks next year because we have so much debt and no one will loan us anything without increases in interest rates, the resulting inflation, etc...

Reagan was able to "save the economy" as well by doing the same, injecting a shitload of federal debt secured money into the economy. The big difference is that the US didn't have the debt when he started like it does now.

This is the ass kicking we Americans have been asking for now for 30 years. And damn if it ain't going to hurt.

As far as Russia drilling off of Florida for oil, people forget that just because the US won't do it off its own cost doesn't mean other nations won't. It's international waters, after all. ;)

I know a lot of people forgot such concepts.
