Saudi Arabia mulls marriage ban for girls under 18

RIYADH (Reuters) – Saudi Arabia may ban marriage for girls below 18, a government minister said after a case of an eight-year old girl marrying a man more than 40 years her senior drew international criticism and embarrassed the kingdom.

"Among the options that are available and excluding the issue of puberty, is to ban marriage for (people) under 18," Justice Minister Mohammed al-Eissa told Asharq al-Awsat newspaper.

Considering they still treat women as second class human beings and property to be traded or married off to then be virtual slaves to their husbands it's a marginal improvement. I wouldn’t pat them on the back yet. God forbid an adult women marries out of love.

I was just going to say...after seeing how most women drive here (and a good majority in the US)...this isn't necessarily a bad thing. You know it's bad when a woman is saying this. :1orglaugh

Saudi Arabia is one of the great countries in the middle east.

They are also very advanced and are not like most middle eastern countries.

it's funny, in the disturbing sense, how here in the west (these days) marrying an 8 year is just disgusting but in other parts of the world perfectly normal....damn cultural relativism! in general, we simply do not have the grasp of the culture to understand how this could be acceptable. however, hopefully saudi arabia will do something about this. it's a crazy fucking world.
