There are a couple of things man cannot live without; food ,water and shelter. He will go to any lengths to get them be it beg borrow or steal.

Can we include sex/porn in that category? Given the dysfunctional nature in which man craves these carnal desires i dont think it would be wrong to say and that this new millenia sex/porn has become an item of consumption. Like going to nearby grocery store.

People tend to chase after sex like their life depended on it. I don't know whether im generalizing here but thats how i see it atleast through the internet, media and daily life experiences.

For me it could wait and im not on the internet browsing 24/7. Neither am i always striving to pick chicks up unlike my buddies who seem to view sex with desperation.

Is it like that , in the west?

What is it for you ?

duhhhh...sexual drive is key to our survival...reproduction.

Porn is not an instinct and is much different than the act of sex. Its stimulation, but its not the same. Sex is an action, porn is a possession (?)...

So sex is essential, porn (sadly) no.

I'm not talking about procreation but as in recreation. Do we blow it out of its normal and sensible proportions which leads to the dysfunctional nature that people seem to view it with?

oh, okay you made it sound as if you were wondering if we could live without sex or porn...

Porn is a mix of both. You have the actual "deviants" out there who are sick fuckos, but I would say a lot of it has to do with the continual taboo that has been placed on it. Society is structured in a way where porn is not going to be "normal". If it happened that we had decided that porn be accepted, then things would be different. But for now, I would say that to some extent man had lived for hundreds of years without mainstream pornography. Hell it was only within the last century where technology has allowed us to mass distribute all sorts of pornographic media.

Personally, it all comes down to what the individual feels, the socialization they went through, and how comfortable they are with such material. I dont think its an over reaction by the people, because certainly if it was so unwanted we wouldn't have the multi billion dollar porn industry we have today. So obviously there are a lot of people who dig the porn. Sex is everywhere, and its definitely making an impact on how we deal with it as a whole. Its like everything else in the world, when people dont like something or feel uncomfortable with it, they react. Porn is no exception.

I've read that the sex drive is the body's second strongest drive, just behind survival. With that in mind, it's really no wonder that with society-at-large's suppression of sexuality in general, society has produced some inhuman individuals. I've said it several times on this board, and I'll say it again: suppress basic humanity (sexuality), you get inhuman people.

From another perspective, take a look at Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. I think we can all agree that breathing, water, and eating is more important than sex, but they're all on the same level - at the bottom. It's hard to achieve the upper levels without the lower ones solidly in place (after all, who cares about self-esteem if you're starving?).

Thats only for the poll. Didnt make sense to have one for porn but you never know with the perverts who wake and sleep with bree olson in their heads.

Also it is the commodification of women that porn glorifies which has an adverse perverse effect on the males and as long as this is the case we will continue to have rapists and sex offenders who will stop at nothing to get what they desire.

I dont think it is because people are uncomfortable that leads to the dysfunctional aspect. Porn has made a commodity out of women and that's how men look at women most of the times, this was there as it is , porn has just brought out the sickness that was inherent.

I would say that porn is not responsible for the "commodification of women" like you say it is. I hold patriarchy, and other more broader social constructions responsible for that. And I also dont believe that rape and sexual deviance is a result of pornography. There much more psychological, even biochemical reasons for that sort of shit. Im sure, watching rape porn, or that really extreme shit has its effect, but the user first had a desire to partake in it. There are just too many factors to lay all the blame on porn.

I would still argue that its not the porno business that makes women or sex a commodity. I mean come on, women are plastered all over. Once the genius found out "sex sells", it all began. But again, the mistreatment of women and such is much deeper than porn. I would even say that most men dont intentionally view women as a commodity at all. its more of an underlying normalcy that is a result of our social structure. Also, you have to understand that its not just men objectifying women, nor that all these women are just clueless to what they are doing. Its a business, its a profession, and a lot of them are well aware of that fact. One side would argue that women find it empowering and that they choose to "liberate" themselves sexually. Others would say its harmful, and that it's a path of destruction. I am not neglecting the fact that women ARE mistreated and overall have been at a disadvantage for a loonnng time. That needs to change, but I dont feel like porn is the main reason for all of it. Its the media as a whole that is responsible for what we have today. ITS EVERYWHERE, and just pay attention to how many beautiful women are posing next to some product...

But after all of this, I have to admit that sexual objectification is a very complex issue. One I admit, I have just my opinion on. Im not right, just my 2 cents.

Of-course porn solely isn't to blame at all , but it aint helping reduce or stem the rot that society has perpetuated since time immemorial.

Good you brought this up since this is what needs careful consideration , women doing porn and feeling liberated and people viewing porn in whose eyes those same women feeling liberated are objectified and the mental image of which is taken on the streets and vented out on unsuspecting folk.

I know it isn't an easy subject but porn is doing more damage than mitigating any sexual frustration the average Joe might be suffering from.

you missed my point man...I acknowledged porn as partly responsible for it is a small cog in a large machine which is the media beast...and its certainly detrimental to some, just as it is beneficial to some.

To me porn is the easiest thing to point our fingers at and say "hey fuck that shit, thats whats fucking stuff up". Its easy because sex alone has throughout history been a taboo among cultures. Its the "witch' where we can lay blame easily, and its weight in the public eye will make it an easy target.

But my argument is that its much more deeper. We have to ask ourselves the really tough questions. Those that deal with the way our society is shaped as of right now. Why is there still a significant gender gap in nearly all aspects of our lives? Our gender roles, what influences them? Why do women feel it necessary to go get fakee boobies? Why do men feel like they need to act like men? What is it that makes these divisions so apparent in the way we live? Its socialization, which isnt just porn, its EVERYTHING around you...

That could be very well answered by a series of questions too:

Why is it that women don't rape men? Why was there a feminist movement as opposed to a masculist one? Why dont men bear children ? Why does a guy pay the bill on the first date?

these are stereotypes and roles engendered as evolution and society deemed them to be. nothing much we can do about that other than not trying to fuck it up even more by reinforcing those same beliefs and constructs.
