Thoughts? We are in debt something like 14 trillion and I'm wondering, how can this continue. The world is burning alive right now - it seems like there is a tragedy every week.

And sorry if this thread (or a similar one) has/had already been started.

We never do it without economic bias (i.e. Rwanda, Congo, etc.) so it's not like we really police the world so much as our own economic interests and security interests.

Probably there a net economic gain to doing this with our trading partners (or we wouldn't bother,) but it seems to garner us as much badwill as good.

It would be cool if the UN was strong enough to at least shut down genocides though. That kind of shit should be stopped!

Yeah, well, the overwhelming majority of countries that set that continent back were European; The Belgians, the Germans, the British, the Portuguese, the French, etc.

Ike, hit the nail on the head. There is no "World Police," just states with the power to do so working within the realms of their own self interest. If you no longer enjoy paying for your gas relatively cheaply (in comparison to the rest of the world), by all means vote Libertarian next time.

No in general, but we should always support our true allies, who have proven their friendship, and/or in cases of CLEAR rational self interest. :2 cents:

No doubt, just making the point that we don't really police the world,
just specific parts where we consider it in our interest.

Hell no !

They should have never started ! They are making the world a worst place !
I won't talk about Iraq or Afghanistan (even though there's much to tell about...), there is a way better example : Chile

USA were not OK with fairly elected but socialist president Salvador Allende. They backed-up General Augusto Pinochet to organise in his coup. Pinochet became the deadly sout-american dictator. He's responsible for the death of 3.000 Chileans and the torture of more than 35.000 others.

Like when they support democracy and revolution in countries like Egypt and Libya but not in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia where there is still much oppression but the US is best buds with the ruling Saudi royal family and wants to continue this relationship. The US like any other country for that matter should have a fixed position on morals/ethics/values and adjust their foreign policy accordingly, no permanent enemies, no permanent friends, every foreign relation decided by the current head/government of that country. The hypocrasy will only dim peoples view of america, the taliban were ok enough to fight the soviets but now they are suddenly bloodthirsty religious fanatics, Saddam was once a nice guy so we sold arms to him then suddenly overnight he turned into a murderous brutal tyrant

Lets face it America is trying to help, it's just the whole world needs to be responsible and take care of themselves as well, most third world countries are in poverty and can't even grow their own crops, America is at least trying to help these in need and those that have had natural disaster's like Indonesia, Haiti, Japan.
Where we need to keep away is the War on Drugs, the War on Terrorism and the whole Iran/North Korea Nuclear subject as well.
My answer is No because we need to help our country before we can help the world, our healthcare, social security, the national deficit and poverty should all come first in the United States. I say abolish the space program and help us here on Earth!

i really think the US really needs to focus on dealing with it's own problems and getting it's own shit in order before it can even think about telling other countries how to do their thing or even helping them for that matter...there's plenty of crime, starvation and people in need here who need more help besides welfare, people need to be given the opportunities as well as the incentive to help themselves thrive...in any event, regardless of what condition america is in in it has no place directly interfering with others countries business. helping allies in need who request it is one thing, but forcing "assistance" on sovereign nations who don't request it is an invasion, plain and simple...also, people expecting the US to send aid all over the world is just as ridiculous IMO

So we should stop our exploration of space to throw more money at problems that have already cost billions? These problems you have mentioned have been around for a long time and will probably be around a lot longer. Sacrificing the space programs would be a tragedy and wouldn't be a magic sure-fire fix. ... As to America policing the world? .. They wouldn't be doing it without a monetary or political gain in the first place. So, as long as it's profitable, I doubt they will "stop".

Should America continue to "police" the world?

We know they won't be missed when they go back to isolationism.

Police the world? hell no! but when one or more of our key trading partners and/or allies happen to get hassled beyond reason, yes, I think that we need to get involved . . . but first, ball gag every member of the UN, cut off their forms of communication and put their headquarters on lockdown, otherwise we're just asking for trouble. ....... you know what they say about loose lips.

I advocate the creation of a new police team of countries. They will come from all aspects of society, so you know there will be some juicy personal drama when they are not out kicking ass.

Here's how I see it:

The Commando: Germany
The Accountant: Canada
The Karate Kid: South Korea
The Token Black Guy: Ghana
The Female/Gay One: France

Al Queda doesn't stand a chance. Well, against France, maybe...

You know that the states helps India by selling them the terminator seed, right? :facpalm:

I'm confused, I thought that's what you were doing.

France will rape AQ and therefore be the most feared. Lets not forget all the horror the French inflicted on the Morrocans, for one...

The Space Program is a waste of money, It costs Billions and there's nothing out there! What can the US gain from it, moon rocks? That money is being used unwise and excessively, I admit NASA technology has gone far but there's really not much man can do in space.
Just think of all the fuel used for one launch it's pretty ridiculous
