A far better re-write:
A Close Shave A beginning.
Space, Space is frictionless. What exactly does this mean? For the planet Farce, it could have meant everything or nothing. It moved into the Pretense system; at a constant pace. A rock--If you could call such a monstrosity that--it seemed to move quite blissfully. Spinning, other fragments twirling about its mass.
Perhaps the inhabitants of the planet Farce where also ignorant? Ever closer in perpetual motion, the asteroid did not have the luxury of time, time for the old questions. Who am I? Why do I exist? Existential matters.
The asteroid plunged into chaos, like a employee late for work--impact. Impacting upon the planetary shield it collided with planet Farce fully committing itself to the realm of oblivion. The last thoughts of an asteroid, if one was capable of possessing thoughts-- forever lost to the void.
"That's the second one this month" Tall with brown eyes and hair, Orion Stargazer could only be described as a rather meticulous bureaucrat. Tapping on his control console impatiently, a man fond of order and all associated with it, he would tally astrological events, some of little significance, causing great frustration among his peers.
"Meaning what?" short, broad of shoulder with blond hair and blue eyes, Cynus Skeptor a man of limited hobbies and interests "I don't know. But these collisions, two of them, within this time frame?" exclaimed Orion with a puzzled expression.
"It's almost like the universe is out to get us" he said with the utmost of seriousness. Scoffing with a raised eyebrow, "Not everything has some deeper mystical meaning. As a society we have moved past such crap. It's probably an asteroid field moving close by" enjoying the challenge much to his chagrin.
Society had long ago erased the spiritual, no longer was their belief in higher powers. Science was now god--spirituality no longer fashionable due to technology, war and strife. "Your probably right, Forgive me, I will record the incident in the log" setting to work frantically, he entered the incident.
"You do that, Damn if we where vigilant" leaving the thought unfinished, he looks out the window. Above the planet Farce, high in orbit they are on board a space station. There are other stations of a smaller design, they appeared to be formed into a defensive line around the planet. Silvery, resplendent and refracting sunlight, the space station looks rather sleek while also managing to radiate an aura of menace. "It's been months since we got to blow up something, my favorite activity" Cynus working at his interface, Leans over, with what could only be vigilance "Old kinetic weapons, definitely more sass than energy weapons--just right for this crap" gazing out the window now, his intent is quite clear, Blowing shit up.
An amused expression, he could not help but laugh at Cynus "It's not so bad, we are doing a great service for our kind" Frowning and letting out a resigned sigh Cynus replies "Orion, I have no doubt, no doubt that this is what you were born to do. I on the other hand, I was destined for greater things. Greater things than being stuck on some glorified boy's toy--waiting for something to happen, it rarely does, past activity not included, we even missed it!"
His feelings of entitlement where ingrained from birth, hailing from a powerful clan upon the home world, those of house Skeptor where usually more at home with military affairs--Cynus being the exception, he was more fond of the "good" time. Orion like Cynus also came from a powerful clan, however he was quite content with his position, safe in the knowledge that he was serving his people's best interests.
"Why this thing can't be automated?" remembering history class, that day's topic-- the Synthetic Unity, machines suffering a existential crisis, who owed their origin to the Pretender's. A messy historical event.
"Oh" said Cynus with an almost sheepish grin, Smiling in reply Orion exclaims "Yea it would require an artificial intelligence. And we know where that leads my friend" Signing once again while gazing out the window Cynus replies "Still wish I was planet side, gambling upon the fortunes of the lesser races" Closing down his command console Orion gets up of his seat and stretches "I am going to get something to eat. Do you want anything?" He does not get a reply, Cynus has returned to his original quest, finding something to blow up--he is deeply immersed in this task.
Walking down the corridors, he can't help but ponder the consequences of such lapses, if not for the planetary shield. He zones out somewhat, his thoughts drifting. A huge asteroid hits the continent of Cunabula, the death toll is in the millions, the resulting shock wave causing global weather upheaval and disaster--shaking himself off, from his mental imagery, he notices that the gym and recreational area are busy. Soon it'll be time for him and Cynus to change shift "Business as usual" musing to himself, the others oblivious to the possibly fatal occurrence in space.
Down on the planet, the auditoriums are packed with observers and gambling enthusiasts, all around them are screens providing full twenty four hour coverage of events. Events taking place, many, many miles from the planet Farce. To casual on-lookers some of these would appear quite morbid.
Hustle and bustle of Pretenders placing wagers on outcomes--the probabilities. There are seven of these great auditoriums located on the planet Farce, although they are not capable of housing the entire population, most of the powerful clans have representatives attend the great auditoriums, on a daily basis.
Routine Disruption
Orion Stargazer sat at the canteen table, his thoughts returning back to the space station, other pretenders where sitting at other tables eating. He could overhear their conversations, much of which consisted of a general desire to be home with their spouses. He gleamed from their surface thoughts, discontent.
Life on a defense space station was entirely male dominated, an old law which became tradition. Looking outside, it was dark, it is always dark in space--oddly in some ways he found it deeply discomforting.
Glancing at the chrono meter on the wall he realized he was late for his shift change, the watch being staggered between break, lunch and actual off duty hours ensuring a constant vigil over the planet's security. Rushing back to his station and what he assumed was Skeptor waiting, waiting to joyously berate him--such opportunities where rare.
Instead to his mild surprise he found two other crew members unknown to him. "Ah Orion is it? We're to take over your shift, your being re-assigned" understanding dawned upon him immediately, remembering the council meeting he was aware it was probably time for the expedition.
Cynus was not at the meeting which meant he was unaware that a expedition to an alien planet was being sent. Nodding to the crew members he awaited instructions. "You are to take a shuttle down to the planet. Cynus is awaiting you in the bay" he nodded once more, then took his leave.
Heading back down the corridor he couldn't believe this was happening so soon--he was not ready, such responsibility. Cynus would be of no help, he'd probably see this as some excuse to behave badly. Effigy Animadverto, the man was a complete enigma, he knew next to nothing about him--except for some rumours, they didn't provide much clarity, instead actually adding to the mystery.
Considered a freak, an oddball by many, he was known to isolate himself for large periods of time working on god know's what, even going so far as to block his thoughts, how he could manage such a feat was relatively unknown to Orion--it was a skill he had yet to learn. Now they where to journey down, to the planet and encroach upon this man's territory--lair? Orion wasn't sure what way he could describe such a thing.
Down on the shuttle deck Orion could see that the hatch was open on one of the shuttles. Must be prepping it for launch already he thought. Making his way over he could see three other shuttles on the deck, each one oval shaped and silver with wings--more an aesthetic feature if anything. Pretender society incapable of removing the concept from their pysche.
Most space stations contained four multi-role shuttles which in the event of an emergency could not ferry the entire population--thankfully lifeboats where located elsewhere on the station. "Orion, pre-launch sequence and destination have been put into the computer--ready to get off this bucket?" he exclaimed rather joyously.
Orion wonders if dear old Cynus has been fully briefed, he seems unusually cheery and enthusiantic--probably believes we are going home having fulfilled our patriotic duty. "Can you believe we are going to the abode of Effigy Animadverto, the man's family is legendary--we'll probably get a commendation, why else would we be visiting him?" He sat down beside Cynus, the hatch closed and the shuttle began to levitate. "Cynus, I guess we will soon find out"
The shuttle made it's way outside the bay into the void of black, into space--in high orbit of the planet Farce, the shuttle dove down into the atmosphere. The computer chimed in "Switching from anti-grav to sound reasonance propulsion--atmospheric entry imminent"
Plunging into the atmosphere, geographical land masses became visible to the occupants, descending upon the continent of Cunabula--they flew past at incredible speeds, out to sea. They came upon a string of Isles known as the Stellar Isles.
Concepta the global capital--a gigantic urban sprawl, a mass of bodies and architecture, impressive by anyone's standards, they arrived at what could only be considered a manor house.
Isolated, out on the fringes of the city, it was located upon a plateau, a full view of the city was on display. The shuttle found it's way to the landing pad, judging by the appearance--the landing pad had seen better days, through lack of use or maintenance, perhaps a question, only the owner could answer.
"We have arrived" Cynus gazed upon his surroundings with uncharacteristic sobriety, hesitantly he used the shuttle's command interface to open the hatch. "I don't like this Orion, It's too quiet" stepping outside the shuttle, Orion turned to Cynus "Come on, it will be ok, we've all heard how Effigy appreciates his privacy"
Both made their way from the shuttle, coming upon a door they paused and looked at each other. Impatiently Cynus pushed the door--surprisingly the door opened."Nice, another corridor. I've been seeing a lot of these lately" Orion said.
Proceeding down the corridor they could see many paintings along the walls, paintings of prominent figures--some of which where ancestor's of Effigy Animadverto the second. "Orion, is that what I think it is? Holy crap it is!" Cynus rushed over to an android, he started to examine it. "An old Synthetic Unity combat model, is he mad?" kicking the husk he realised that it was hollow. "Seems like it is gutted, a damn good thing too, do you realise how dangerous these things are?" Grabbing Cynus, he started to drag him away "Come on, this isn't what we are here for"
Bubbles
Further down the corridor they came upon a force field--it barred their passage, they could go no further. "How are we going to meet him if we can't get past this force field, come on Orion, your the brainiac, tell me"
Touching the forcefield was probably not a good idea, yet he touched it--receiving a very unpleasant shock, it sent him flying backwards. "That hurt" he said regaining his composure, he shrugged his shoulders "I'm stumped" before he could say anything else a computer's voice chimed in "Identify yourshelves" having no other choice the both identified themselves. "Entry is granted, the master is in his lab, please wait while the way is made clear" They both looked at each other puzzled, the force field dissapeared--behind it the floor opened and an elevator came up to ground level.
"Woah that's pretty neat" Cynus said. "Let's take the elevator and find Effigy" Orion replied.
In the elevator--the doors automatically closed, their where no dials or buttons. It became evident that this was going to be a one way trip. Alarmed--Orion tried to find a exit, his frantic panicked searched made Cynus laugh. "Just enjoy the ride my friend, you and your claustrophobia, its ironic"
Reaching their destination--the doors opened, both men exited the elevator, into the great hall. In the center their was a bubble? No one seemed to be about except for them, the bubble appeared to be bending inwards upon itself "What the hell is this?" exclaimed Cynus. Orion gazed upon it, shifting away he gazed around the room looking for Effigy, it was obvious they where alone. Moving forward, they approached the bubble "It doesn't look very stable" Orion said.
Creeping up, behind the two men, Effigy slaped both of them on the back causing a startled jump "Of course it isn't stable, it's a experiment" It folds further inwards upon itself, two points meeting, causing all focus and attention from the three to shift towards it. "This is where things get interesting, not sure what is going to happen?" Effigy starts grinning--he pulls the two closer into a tight group hug "Isn't this exciting, space my friends, I like to think of it as a bubble" he exclaims.
"Never was fond of that folding business, conjured up imagery of laundry--you know what I mean lads?"--A career bachelor-- he loosens his hold and starts to jump up and down somewhat. Orion and Cynus both grin nervously while this mad man seems to be in fits of hysterics. Fits of hysterics in front of some sort of bubble, the nature of which--isn't very clear. "Bend, not fold, bend the bubble"
Emerald eyes with jet black hair--stuck up in a messy arrangement, Effigy, his eyes framed with glasses, also a lab coat and slippers. Presents quite the cliched picture of a mad scientist back on earth, fortunately none are aware of this fact. Perhaps Orion and Cynus had some inkling of the "mad" part, "Effigy we are not here to witness a experiment, we've got important business" While Orion was speaking--the bubble started to contract somewhat.
Suddenly, it imploded producing a miniture black hole, the hole started to suck light in causing the room to go dark. "Is this supposed to happen?" Orion said. All three of them started to feel the pull, Cynus perhaps in this situation, the wisest--ran for one of the lit columns within the great hall. Orion and Effigy, seeing what way the wind was blowing decided it would be prudent to do the same.
Along the column, the three, held on for dear life. "Perhaps I was optimistic about my possible results" Effigy had to shout as air was now being sucked in causing background noise. "What the hell did you even do?" Cynus shouted.
"Oh I haven't formally introduced myself" Effigy replied. In reply Cynus started to laugh maniacally, prompting a well merited show from Orion "This is not funny" looking at Effigy "We've got to close that thing before the whole planet gets sucked in!" hanging onto the column, Effigy started to mutter to himself, seeming to not hear what Orion just said.
"Ah ha! We open another one" Orion and Cynus looked at each other, on their faces a expression of complete disbelief "Are you insane!" Time was running out as more air was dissapearing--soon the room would be a vacuum.
Horizontally hanging, hair blowing, it was getting difficult to hang on--every passing minute. Soon they would be sucked in followed by the manor house and likely the planet perhaps the entire universe, at least they would not be alone.
"Debatable, but opening another one is the solution, they will cancel each other out, similiar to a simple aglebra equation, Quick! we need to make a chain, hold my legs, I need to reach the command console" Haphazardly Orion grabbed onto Cynus "Be gentle that hurt!" exclaimed Cynus. Orion began to climb down until he was hanging off his legs, hanging from his legs he awaited Effigy.
Making his way past the other two, Effigy's journey was accompanied by a chorus of gasps and murmurs--hanging off Orion's legs he reached the glass console, tapping commands he opened a duplicate of the experiment, this too became unstable turning into a black hole.
Both entities began exerting their pull upon the other, both in unison, looped infinity, normal gravity returned to the room causing the three Pretenders to fall to the ground with quite the thud. Quickly getting up, Effigy ran towards the console, this time using it to erect an containment field around the two. "There that should keep them in check until I figure out how to close them"
Picking themshelves up, Cynus and Orion both gazed upon the two mini black holes with suspicion, collectively they let out a sigh of relief. Both began to think coming here was probably not such a great idea, if not somewhat dangerous.
Cynus was going to let Orion take the lead on this one because it was apparant to him Orion somehow had some idea as to why they where here, call it a hunch or maybe he was taking his cues due to Orion's behaviour?
"Effigy now that this unpleasantness has been dealt with? About the expedition?" Dragging himself from the console, a mask of pure concentration--it turned to realization, walking back over to the two Pretenders "You need to get whatever personal effects you wish to bring and say your goodbyes" thinking, Effigy had an idea "The less you bring the better, we can't risk our technology falling into the wrong hands"
Expedition? They both now had the undivided attention of Cynus, he heard expedition, what the hell where they talking about? No one mentioned this to him! Suddenly he felt slightly angry, he didn't sign up for this. Deciding it would be better to find out what exactly they where talking about he bit his tongue.
Registering the confusion upon Cynus face and the turmoil of his thoughts, Effigy realized that perhaps they had not all been briefed. Adopting a councillary tone "Cynus you appear to not realise what we are talking about? Would I be correct?" Feeling the eyes upon him causing mild discomfort, he felt compelled to ask "Effigy, I mean Mr Animadverto" Effigy smiled "You may call me Effigy" Cynus discomfort dissapeared, he began to feel more relaxed.
