so the prices came down. finally. and i was so pumped and ready to finally buy one. i go to the store. get a sales person with me. grab the things i need to get the whole setup..... then he drops the bombshell. its not, and i repeat NOT backwards compatable with the old games anymore! u've gota be freakin kiddin me. thats horrible. i have somewhere near 100 ps and ps2 games. and ive missed em all since sellin my ps2 and i couldnt wait to finally get a ps3 to play em again. well guess what sony. go fuck yourself. im not buyin one. ever. never ever again will i go back to the playstation. u just lost a very good customer. every paycheck, and i mean EVERY paycheck, i buy a new game or controller or gamers guide or accessory or online points for dling stuff or something. every single paycheck. guess its all goin to microsoft from now on.

The new PS3's are not backward compatible with PS2 games but they do work with PS1 games. The very first PS3's were backward compatible with both older consoles. But I dont know about the Slim's backward-ness.

I read an article on the matter earlier today. Someone from Sony said that they would no longer be making backwards-compatible software in their gaming consoles. That totally bites dick because I was actually considering getting a Slim, but if the only things it's gonna play are $50+ dollar games I'll stick with my PS2.

Why would you buy a next-gen console, and play old shitty ass games on it? I never understood the concept of having a console be reverse compatible. I want new consoles, to play new games. It seems like a waste to play PS1 games on a PS3. Why not just keep your PS1/PS2?? If you want to keep playing those games, keep your older console. Plus, instead of Sony putting effort, money and technology into making their console reverse compatible, I'd rather them put that same technology into a bigger hard drive, or better processor, etc.

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.

I bought an '09 Volkswagon Golf, but I can't put all my old '85 parts on it. What gives??

I understand completely with where you're coming from on this. Not a single person complained when they found out that you couldn't play NES games on an SNES, SNES games on a N64, etc. With a PS2 being around $100, it's not that hard to get your hands on a PS2. PS3 hasn't been PS2 backwards compatible for almost a year now. Fortunately, I grabbed the MGS4 80 Gig PS3 package, so mine IS backwards compatible. Besides, PS3 has always been PS1 backward.

To TS: If you REALLY want to get your hands on a backwards PS3, try looking on eBay for one. Your best bet is a 60 Gig PS3. I honestly don't think not being able to play games you've probably played thousands of times on a new system is hardly worth missing out on such games as MGS4, LittleBigPlanet, InFAMOUS, MAG, God of War III, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Killzone 2, Modnation Racers, etc.

I have the 60Gb model [from the same year it launched] and it works fine with most games from the PSone and PS2 era. Infact it played 99 percent of games, untill the 2.50 firmware update arrived. That made things fucked up. It was glitchy as fuck with the backwards compatibility and also with some PS3 games too. Then 2.60 came along and it sorted SOME of those problems like the PS3 games run fine now and a few of the PSone and PS2 titles are working again. But Tomb Raider 2 isn't working at all now, it loads to the main menu and then the screen goes black once you load an old save file or start a new game. So 2.60 still hasn't fixed the backwards compat problem caused by the shitty 2.50 update. EVERYTHING worked fine untill the dreaded 2.50 update file.

If I read correctly, when the PS3 launched, it only had one model that was backwards compatible with with PS2 games. Even then, it wasn't all PS2 games. It only supported about 60% of the PS2's lineup, if i recall correctly.

When they started offering the 80GB version, they left the 60GB BWC, until later on last year, when they stopped doing BWC PS3's altogether. SOME 80GB systems were offered in a PS2 BWC level, but all the PS3's on the shelves today are only PS1 BWC.

I love the PS3, personally. I kept my PS2 anyway, because even if the PS3 I bought would have been BWC with PS2, it wasn't guaranteed to play all my old games. So, I kept the PS2 for when I feel like playing some OG games (GTA III - San Andreas, etc.) I'll play them on the system they were made for

PS3's online play owns the 360 as well. For one, its FREE. lol.

So surely you can just install the nessecary firmware on the new slim model for backwards compatibility?

my reasoning for being pissed over this is first off I live in the barracks, so i dont exactly have alot of room. my room is probably 15ftx15ft with a dual sink area and a single bathroom with a stand up shower only. no baths for us. there are 3 of us living in this room. 3 beds, 3 wall lockers, 3 computer desks. 3 sets of personal belongings, so i really dont have room to have every system i ever owned around to go with my games. second, i was hoping to use this to also cover my upgrade to a blueray player. third, they dont exactly pay us alot in the military, so i was hoping to buy the new ps3 and be able to play it in the same day.... not wait another paycheck or two to be able to buy a game or two to go with it..... for some people these issues are non existant. for me, the reverse compatability going away is a deal breaker.

yeah, sucks, but they'll work on it! I had already heard that there wold most likely be a software update/download that would allow for some backward compatability in the slim versions, perhaps maybe even some sort of emulator. I have the bulkier version 60GB and I am very happy with it!

You know, the only problem I'm seeing so far about the Slim is that it's the standard of the PS3's now. So...Are the companies going to continue making products like the Intercooler for the bulkier PS3's? Eh. It's probably not that big of a deal.
