Spiritual, but not Religious

I'm too lazy to set a usertitle.
It's taken me awhile to discover that religiouus services and rituals are fuckin ridiculous. The Bible is a collection of bad fiction that couldn"t have been "god inspired."
I do believe there is a higher power, and an afterlife since creation didn't come by accident.Any similar opinions? Thanks.

Three lullabies in an ancient tongue
Similar to the "Life After Death" thread but I would agree, ritualized religion is, for the most part, a bunch of superstitious horseshit. Today, it's big business (especially Christianity). I also agree about the Bible....it's the word of men pretending to speak for God IMO. As I stated in the other thread, the term "afterlife" is simply a different state of our spirit, essence, soul....whatever you want to call it....than the existing state of life we are experiencing in our present form. This is what I choose to believe and remains quite subjective.

However, the question as to whether there is a higher power is not up for conjecture. It can be scientifically proven to exist via the laws of physics. Jesus may or may not be the redeemer of our sins but there can be no debate that the speed of light is 186,000 miles/second or that water will boil at 212 degees F. There obviously is some governing force in the universe that dictates these givens. Therefore, the belief in this governing force could be construed as a belief in a deity of some sort I suppose. It could also be simply a belief in a higher force, limited in scope (i.e. it can govern the speed of light but holds no sway over what I say or do in my individual life outside of those physical boundaries, nor does it care). It's this....the concept of free will....that leads me to doubt the existence of an omniscient and omnipresent God who affects the minute details of each of our lives. Unfortunately for most of the ritualized religions, it is a fervent belief in God's involvement in every facet of our lives that is the centerpiece of the very rituals (prayer, sacrifice, confession etc) that define them. It's a lot of pomp and ceremony but means little else other than to draw a measure of comfort for those who choose to blindly accept it. Those of us who do not can absolutely be spiritual without being considered "religious" in the commonly-held meaning of the the term.

I completely agree with your summation. Thanks

I think your approach to spirituality is a good starting point, but I do think you should try to be a little more respectful of the customs, practices, and scriptures of Christians and other religions, eventhough you may not agree with them. That is where alot of trouble in this world starts, by people not having enough respect for how other people choose to worship and live their lives.

This is highly ironic, yet nonetheless true.

I completely agree with this statement.

Glad to see you took my advice and stopped being a hippie.

I am in my own little world but it's okay they know me here.
You can't say it wasn't an accident because you have no way in tested a god's methods in creating a universe. It's a post-facto argument claiming that because we can assume there's intelligence in the creation of the very violent and chaotic universe, that means an unnatural being created everything naturally but out of nothing. Doesn't make any sense nor does it answer any questions. Could you accept the fact that there's no after life or is the fear of not existing, too much? Spirituality is the starting point towards religion and it seems that most people use spirituality in place of the word "emotion". It's an appeal to emotion by people that want to apply something more to something that's probably not as special as they think it is.

Not spiritual and certainly not religious. Just get on with life and stop looking for excuses.

Mind control through guilt and noones behavior really changes. Sinning and repenting keep them fucking cumming to church to fill the plates. What a fuckin scam.

I wouldn't use the word "accident" but who's to say creation didn't happen by chance? The only thing intelligent people do know for sure is that there is no biblical god or any other religious entity actively watching over us. The entire notion that there must be an afterlife is so childish and haughty. Why are human beings such important creatures that there must be an afterlife for us? The reality is we are organic life forms that will die, decompose, and then our atoms with take on another form (principle of mass conservation). So live your life and appreciate the time you actually have in this world instead of wasting your time focusing on old superstitions.

We will be full of patience Mr Freeones!
I consider myself to be a deist. I believe in God and that he plays a role in our world. I however, think that the Bible is written by man and there is some controlling human influence. I do not believe in organized religion as it seems mostly used not to comfort and guide people, but to scare them into acting a certain way.

Being "spiritual" and not religious is a fallacy.

No way.

The universe is far too complex to have happened by accident.

There has to be something better after this life.
If not this has all been a joke.

We might as well live like Mad Max, if this is the only life we will have.

Case in Point.

if you are a christian who believes the bible then you deny all scientific fact about the age of the world. If you believe in god you must believe that the earth is only 5 - 7 thousands years old, which has been proven beyond doubt. They recently found human skulls that are 1.8 million years old in a cave in Georgia. That is indisputable by way of fact, but those who are believers dont adhere to factual evidence. Remember, they have turned off a large portion of their brain that recognizes facts and logic. There is no intelligent design. Life was created over billions of years of evolution and continues to evolve. There was no shazam and adam and eve appeared. to believe in any of that is simply mindless.

Lies  Not every Christian says the earth is 6,000 years old.

No one knows the age of the earth.

Dirk, you can come out now.

if you believe in the bible you MUST believe that the age of the earth is 6,000 years old. How can you believe it's billions of years old but believe that adam n eve were here first? the dinosaurs were here long before any form of man. Early man was ape-like, but to believe in the biblical teachings you must deny that. How can you do both? the bible tells us that the humanity is 5-7 thousand years old. How do could you possibly acknowledge the science that man has been around for nearly 2 million years and believe the bible? That makes no sense because one cancels out the other.

The Bible is just bad fiction. No wonder Catholics basically ignore it.
