Star Wars - The Most Popular Movie Ever?

This movie raised the bar for all sci-fi movies and every second director mentions it when it comes for their motivation for making movies. There are only a few movies you can tell that, but Star Wars will even be the most popular movie when our grandchildren grow up.

Just like Space Invaders. Everyone kept telling me it was just a "game". Then Independence Day came out. Now who's laughing?

I know I'm not. And when my Death Star comes floating into view, I doubt anyone else will be laughing.

Actually when it comes to wide ranging overall concepts and other things in a work of art Lucas might be one of the best. It's just what when you get down to things like dialog and character development at least in his later movies that he has a failing. I’ll admit that in the prequels some of the dialog was downright cringe worthy. Star Wars is the greatest fictional setting ever, and Lucas has to deserve credit for that for basically coming up with it. Although maybe he just got lucky, fell over ass backwards into it, and caught lighting in a bottle like nobody has before with something like that.


As far as Lord of the Rings go, it's greatest feat is launching it's out genre and all the great fictional works that came after it. The books themselves weren't that great comparatively to what came after it unlike Star Wars where it's still the best. The movies are diminished somewhat by that and the fact they came out so long after the books were made.

Star Wars is the epitome of Hollywood's renunciation of maturity and intelligent filmmaking. With its outstanding commercial success that broke the confines of mere ticket sales, American studios all of a sudden stopped producing movies for adults and started focusing their attention on a juvenile - shall I say: infantile? - audience.

Star Wars movie set the standard of the importance of special effects and gave rise to the popularity of the science fiction genre much like Bruce Lee set the standard for better realistic fight choreography and gave rise to the popularity of the martial arts genre.

As for the most popular movie ever, IMDB refers to either the Shawshank Redemption or the Godfather.
