WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama told a gathering of thousands of gay and lesbian activists Saturday night that he will end the "don't ask, don't tell" military policy.

The policy lets gays and lesbians serve in the military as long as they don't disclose their sexual orientation or act on it.

Obama did not give a timetable for the repeal of the law, which was passed by Congress in 1993 and signed by President Bill Clinton. Clinton also promised to repeal the ban but was blunted by opposition from the military and Congress.
