Subway Have Removed Ham and Bacon From Their Menus to Appease Muslims!

Adding halal meat would be good business sense, if that's what their customers want. Removing options though? The Muslims can't be appeased with just having halal options at subway? Others have to have less options? How does that make business sense? Sure it's not all the locations. But if my local subway removed the items I enjoy, I'm not going across the city just so I can have subway. They've likely lost business.

It's a lot more difficult than simple additions or substitution. They could add an additional bank of trays with halal separated from the traditional fillings but that takes up space. Add to that is the separation of tools to cut the sandwich and washing facilities. It would take 2 separate facilities to accommodate this. Add the fact that the kids slapping these sandwiches around won't care to honor the dietary/company standards to run a shop separating. Think of the veg customer. They don't want to discover bitts of meat in their veggie special. Nor do they want to see their sandwich cut in half with the same knife that just cut a meatball parm.

I think Subway is the only American fast food place I've seen that's always the same no matter where you are in the world.

I've noticed that, too. When I visited McDonald's in Singapore, the only item that was also on the US menu was chicken nuggets.

1. They're a private company and can sell or not sell whatever the fuck they want, if they think it's good for business.
2. I wish, with all of my heart and soul, that my biggest problem in life was the fact that I could no longer get a ham sandwhich at a fe hundred Subway locations in a country in which I don't live.
3. Subway sucks anyway! It's generally cheaper to just make your own fucking sandwhich at home. It tastes better, too. Plus there are probably a million locally-owned places that'll gladly serve pork and that are more deserving of the money of the general public anyway.

To add to what Bob said, to make it a bit more clear, it's because in their practice, they're not supposed to even eat food that's been touched or associated with pork. So if the cook just made a sandwich that had ham and used a knife to cut it, then makes a sandwich without pork with a muslim and uses the same knife, that's against their religion. Or if the cook so much as touches his sandwich after having touched pork, even wearing gloves, they can't eat that. So say I were making a sandwich for a muslim, had just picked up a pepperoni and set it back down, then went back to their sandwich sans pepperoni, they wouldn't be able to eat it.

So if these Subways were to keep the pork products while still introducing halal items, they would have to build more space in the restaurant with completely separate counters, utensils, and ingredients completely separate from the rest, in order to appease them. They can't, or aren't supposed to if they follow their religion correctly, eat anything that's even remotely associated with non-halal products.

Personally, I do get upset about christians trying to force their beliefs down other people's throats. But that's just me. I get upset with any culture that tries to create laws and cultural guidelines based on a specific religion or other personal beliefs. Unfortunately the same can't be said for the rest of the world.

And yes, my point about Christianity IS relevant. I can name a good chunk of stores, in both Finland and the US, where I can't buy certain things because of Christians not finding it acceptable. Shit, most of Finland's and America's laws about buying alcohol on Sundays COME FROM CHRISTIANS. I don't like having their religion shoved down my throat, but as much as it annoys me, as an Atheist, I'm not going to throw a fucking fit over it. Private companies can do whatever they want, and if I don't agree I can very easily just give my money to a shop who sells what I want.

What you have continuously ignored in this thread is that it is the market that have dictated this change and not Muslim pressures. If it was such a bad move by the company for the shops in those areas, then the local communities involved would have had more to say and argue about. Market logic would want that as long as there are pork eating people in a community you would keep serving pork too. Let's assume that areas where they cut pork off are made of 90% Muslim community: what's the logic in cutting 10% of potential clients off? Logic would want you to serve both halal products and pork. That's why is reasonable to think that it is a much more political issue than you think. Now, you can agree or disagree with me, but that's a completely different matter; in fact it's exactly the core of a discussion, confronting each other over different views.

About the Daily Mail, the news has been reported by many other media and the news has been confirmed: DM being rubbish or not, Subway has cut pork off their menus in those areas.

As has been pointed out a number of times and can be found on the Subway site above, you CANNOT SERVE HALAL AND PORK TOGETHER!

You are not cutting out 10% of your community, either. You are just not serving pig in any form. The only people that you would be cutting out are other faiths that do not want their meat blessed as Halal. You are assuming that every one of the 10% would demand pork or ham in their sandwhiches.

They all worship the god of Abraham, the difference is listed above, each group ignores the teachings of the prophets they don't recognize.

What could Subway place on their menu for Christians? The only dietary requirement for a large Christian denomination I am aware of is no meat on Lent. Some Subway locations offer Vegetarian, or Vegan sandwiches. Granted the were not added specially for that reason, but I cannot think of any other dietary requirement for a Christian denomination.
