Another strike for the "religion of peace." When will this senseless violence end?

In the most brutal attack in a new surge of violence across Iraq, a suicide bomber detonated himself Tuesday, Jan. 18, in a crowd of some 300 police applicants in the northern city of Tikrit, killing at least 50 and wounding as many as 150 others, according to local media. Reports from the scene describe pickups piled high with bodies, blood running down the sides of the vehicles. Hospitals are reported to be overloaded with critically injured patients, and a local mosque is calling on followers for emergency blood donations.

The bombing, in the hometown of former dictator Saddam Hussein, who was executed in December 2006, is the bloodiest attack since Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's political bloc wrangled enough parliamentary seats to begin forming a new government. It is the worst in Iraq since the horrific siege of a Christian church in Baghdad that killed 52 worshipers last Oct. 31. Al-Qaeda in Iraq and its offshoot are believed to be behind the episodes.

It happens so often - this being one of the goriest in recent memory - that the religion has lost all credibility. I know good Muslims, but for Heaven's sake, when will the people speak up by the millions? At this rate America will be in Iraq for the next 50 years as predicted by pundits.

People are assuming this is about religion, this is more about the political power struggle currently going on in Iraq and sectarian violence which could be religious or most possibly tribal. A religiously motivated suicide bomber would've attacked a rivals religious building or leader etc. I've said it here before and I'll say it again, Saddam was the only one brutal enough to keep these people apart and keep Islamic radicals out of the country, now the Sunnis are as good as finished and every Christian in Iraq will either be forced into Jordan or killed within the next 2-3 years if they stay. I hope the likes of Bush, Blair, Cheney, Hoon, Rumsfeldt and Powell sleep easily at night, surprising how they put so much effort into manufacturing their lies to start this conflict and now they don't even want to talk about Iraq despite so many civilian deaths (estimated 1 - 1.5 million) as well as over 4000 US troops killed, like a baby getting tired of its toy. Shame on all of them.

A lot of these so called muslims use the religion as an excuse to settle personal differences. In Pakistan I've heard of men making adultery allegation against their wife in accordance with sharia law when really they just have a problem with her family or want a new wife so need to get rid of her, also in the case of that pakistani christian woman accused of blasphemy it's been said the villagers didn't like her so are using the blasphemy laws to get rid of her. And all the muslims I know don't even consider these suicide bombers and extremist as muslim (due to their non muslim actions) so why would they or other muslim leaders have to or want to condemn people that they don't even consider muslim. I didn't see the pope and other christian leaders making public announcements about the Westboro church or 'Pastor' Terry Jones.

"So called"? Have you read the Koran? There is ample propaganda in that "book" for it to be considered the catalyst for their behavior. And save me the Old Testament jive, because Christians aren't blowing themselves to bits. Even as far back as the crusades much of the bloodshed instigated was by Muslims who slaughtered Christians.

I'd love to high five you for your spirit and I don't think you're being insincere, but what your Muslim friends think or say is irrelevant. At least when in context.

I grew up in NY. Lots of Jews live in New York. A minority of 'em are orthodox. These orthodox and Hasidics had crazy beliefs. Women should cover their arms and legs, men can't touch a woman's hand, women should bathe in milk during menstruation and it was normal for rabbis to suck the blood from a newborn baby's circumcised penis. These things are all true.

Obviously, the overwhelming majority of Jews despised these practices and promoted avoiding these practices, but they never said that these practices weren't Jewish. That would be a lie. Modernization made these rituals grotesque, but still entirely Jewish.

The Pope speaks for Catholics, not the Baptists who opposed the Vatican. Martin Luther protested the Catholic nepotist culture. Both religions have separate philosophy based on what philosophic lineage(s) that followed Christ (just like Sunni and Shia) but still share the same fundamental writings from the same literal foundation. So, the Pope might ignore or even disagree with the Westboro Church, but will not offer a sound argument regarding how they are wrong.

I never mean to insinuate that Islam is any more disgusting than Christian faiths. The difference is that Christian ideology is coupled with a fantasized compassion that has no real origin in the written accounts of the supposed prophets. But the chronology of the Judeo-Christian bible does act to negate cruelty and violence (somewhat). The chronology of the Hadith and the Qur'an act to dismiss compassion. Latter violence contradicts early pacifist concepts. As the memoirs of any successful warlord would.

I know people who have read the Koran and their view is that suicide is strictly forbidden so they believe most suicide bombers won't even have read the koran and probably been influenced by radical imams with their own agendas. Christians were brutal in the crusades and killed all those in jerusalem despite saying they would spare their lives, only Saladin of the saracens kept his word and often the muslims and jews fought together against the crusaders. I personally think all religion should be given up as all it does is cause trouble throughout the world, people can use any religion to incite hate and violence and could argue forever about what religion is best citing various historical events etc. Have you ever considered that Christians aint blowing them because they've always been top dogs and the rulers/oppressors rather than the ones under occupation, suicide is a final desperate act and has roots in Sri Lanka (Tamils controlled by the Sinhalese) and the middle east (Palestinians under Israeli occupation). And I'm not really interested in debating religion as it simply bores me. The undeniable truth is that Iraq wouldn't be in the mess it's in if the Coalition hadn't illegally invaded and forcefully removed the tyrannical govt controlling these people and having no idea how to fill the political vacuum. If Saddam was the problem why does violence rage on 8 years after his govt was toppled and now the US (abandoned by their so called coalition allies) has decided to run and leave a few troops behind secure in their bases whilst the Iraqi people wipe each other out. Why are US troops not at all public/recruitment venues alongside the new Iraqi army, Obama too scared any more deaths were dent his popularity?

Do you mind if I ask what roles they fill?
Last I heard priority targets for the Afghans among the British army were signallers and royal engineers.
If they patrol, do they at least have gunshields? Do they operate Stryker? What body armour do they use?
