The secret ingredient? MY BALLS
A police officer was put on desk duty after pulling over an NFL player rushing to see his dying mother-in-law in the hospital and holding him in the hospital parking lot as she died.

Dallas police officer Robert Powell stopped Houston Texans running back Ryan Moats' SUV outside Baylor Regional Medical Center during the early hours of March 18 after Moats rolled through a red light. Moats and his family had gotten a call saying his mother-in-law was dying.

Video from a dashboard camera inside the officer's vehicle, obtained by a Dallas-Fort Worth TV station, revealed an intense exchange in which the officer threatened to jail Moats.

On the police video, the officer is heard telling the two of them to get out and put their hands on the car, reports CBS affiliate KHOU-TV in Houson.

Moat's wife, Tamishia, ignored Officer Powell's commands and rushed to see her dying mother. But Moats was detained.

"I've got seconds before she is gone," said Moats, as he tried to explain the urgency of the situation to the officer.

The police officer ordered 27-year-old Tamishia Moats to get back in the SUV, but she ignored him and rushed inside the hospital to see her mother, Jonetta Collinsworth, 45, and was by her side when she died a short time later. She had breast cancer.

The Moatses, who are black, said they can't help but think that race might have played a part in how Powell, who is white, treated them.

"I think he should lose his job," said Ryan Moats, a Dallas native.

Normally, I would be siding with the police officer, but, in this case, they were already in the hospital parking lot, so it's pretty obvious that they're not making up some story about their mother (in-law) dying. The officer should've let them go and ticketed them later.

But, the thing about this story that I think is bullshit is how race got thrown into the mix. Why does race always get thrown into the mix when a black person deals with a white police officer? Seriously, it's 2009...can't we just let this shit go already?

You didn't side with the police. :D

Because, things like this always happen to them.

Just like in Georgia when the police busted down a door and shot an elderly black woman. You know busted down her door without a cause and without a warrant.

Which is illegal. :wave2:

Which is worse?

American Police or Blackwater Army? I think both are motherfucking pain in the ass.

Limit American police's rights and restructure most of officers' mind to a "race-less" way of thinking. What the hell? Still living in 1950s and before?

Haha - I gotta do this - using the normal Chef "logic" for this, well, if the guy wanted to be by his mother-in-law's side when she died then he shouldn't have broken the law. It's only his own fault.

;)

Chef, do you have the link to the orig. article for us?

Lastly, re: this:

Well, what does it being 2009 signify?

Is this the standard "A black man is president, so white-on-black racism MUST be completely dead!"??

Oh crap, I thought I put the link. :o Here it is...

http://wcbstv.com/sports/Ryan.Moats.Delayed.2.968527.html

No racism isn't dead, but I'm tired of seeing or reading stories about a black person dealing with a white police officer and having the race card being pulled with no hesitation.

The reason I said that it's 2009 is because this isn't 1935. Black people have rights which are just the same as white people. Black people are just as racist as white people. Yet, almost every single time a white police officer pulls over a black person, all you hear about is how "race" is somehow a determining factor.

Also, it is his fault that he went through a red light. Yes, it was in the heat of the moment, but he deserved a ticket...just not how he got one. The officer could've been a human being for a second and let the man go be with his mother-in-law while she died and then given him a ticket after the fact.

It's certainly POSSIBLE that race was a factor in the incident - but only the innermost place in the cop's brain (and heart?) can know for sure, I guess.

Unless he said something to the people that made it clear to them.

Well, there's two reasons for that:
First: Still today race plays it's role sometimes especially when it comes to law enforcement.
And secondly: You're Americans! You'll always be racists. Like for you or most Jews, Germans will always be "the Nazis", French will always be "the cowards" or Japanese will always be "the slant-eyed Japs". Or like for some older Germans, Italians will always be "the cowards who can't even build a decent car" (Like Himmler said in a speach in front of the military during World War II: "Let's be honest, there's no people in Europe that wouldn't have beaten up the Italians." And that was at a time when Germany and Italy were still allies.)
I'm exaggerating to make my point here, but you know where I'm getting at.

In my opinion, the cop was a ruthless ass, but that's what seemingly a lot of American cops are nowadays. Authority corrupts and a lot of cops love their authority and all the power that comes with it. He should have fined him and be done with it, but that's not a police man's job any more, it seems.

Are you fucking serious? By saying that about Americans, that makes you no better than a racist.

Ehm...I think you should look up what the term "racist" means exactly. And it's a little bit over the line calling a German from my generation a racist as long as you're not absolutely sure of it. Pretty strong insult. Remember my country's past, Chef.
And you know that I don't think that way. Read my posting properly, man, and don't just assume the wrong things in the heat of the moment.
I was giving some hard facts (that resentment, stereotypes, prejudice and hate still are very strong driving factors in the worldview of so many people) with a strong satirical spin and a touch of irony.

Who cares about your country's past? It's the present and you experienced nothing of your country's past. Just like people who are alive today in the US have experienced nothing of our country's past.

I wasn't assuming anything. You clearly said that Americans were racist.

And secondly: You're Americans! You'll always be racists.

Then, you even further your statement by giving examples...

In viewing the footage the officer was within reason because Moats was blowing stop sign after stop sign....the way it's looked at is violating traffic signs can potentially cause death in an accident so the only excusable reason for ignoring them is if you are doing so in an effort to save a life. That wasn't the case here so as far as the cop is concerned....the the driver is failing to stop and virtually evading.

Where the cop crossed the line was the excessive berating and belittling of Moats after he should have understood what the circumstances were.

Hard facts?! Hard facts?! You generalized and stereotyped.....which, as Chef was pointing out, does ingrain in you some tendencies that are very prevalent in racist people.

Your argument/standpoint is thin, weakly formed, and has absolutely NO basis in fact. It is ridiculous supposition on your part, and really, I should not have even wasted my time responding to you, and your "hard facts."

To Chef. Yes, I agree with you that many times, MANY times, when a white police officer has an encounter with a black person, the race "card" is thrown about immediately. But after reading this story, I have to think that the jackass who soon, hopefully, will not brandish a badge and firearm any longer, was acting in such a manner that I hardly think he would have exacted on someone of a lighter complexion. No it is not 1935 anymore, but a lot of the hate and generalized stereotypes, as indicated by our friend above, have survived the ravages of time unscathed.

People like this cop should be stripped of their position and demoted to cleaning toilets, and dirty ones at that, for the rest of their lives.

I don't want to get too involved in this thing with Shindekudasai, but honestly, when he said this:

"And secondly: You're Americans! You'll always be racists."

it seemed pretty obvious - warning: interpretation and reading comprehension required! - given the context that he wasn't espousing his own opinion that Americans - all Americans - are racists, but that the stereotype exists that Americans are racists. I didn't see that he was endorsing that stereotype. Look at his other examples. If anything, by pointing out the various stereotypes that people hold, he was showing the weaknesses inherent in such bigoted, simplistic stereotypes.

As for the incident between this NFL player and the officer. The officer acted like quite a prick. Wasn't clear to me that he was being racist, but the "shut your mouth" orders were really lame. I didn't listen to the whole damn thing (it kept stopping and starting for me, wasn't a smooth vid or audio), but I kept waiting for the officer to call the guy "boy" which clearly has racist overtones. I was also impressed - this is a non-race factor - that the player never mentioned that he was an NFL player, he didn't trot out his celeb status to try to get special favors, and I can imagine that would be very tempting in a situation such as this. The guy really kept his cool very well.

I'm waiting for "Bio'Defense''Grad'" to weigh in here and tell us how the behavior of the white guy makes him embarrassed for his race, and vice-versa. [No, I don't think he will, and I also don't really think he should - as that is some shitty logic and way of thinking. The behavior of this modern-day Barney Fife should be an embarrassment mainly to him, and to some extent, the police dept.]

By the love of god, seriously?! You obviously are either in desperate need for confrontation or unable to read my postings correctly. I was making an exaggerated, satirical and partly ironical posting about how resentment, stereotypes, prejudice and hate are still present in everyday mordern thinking. And I said that very clearly at the end of my posting.
You just picked out one sentence, took it completely out of context and focused only on this one sentence since. Why? Do you have any reason? Or do you just jump at the first word you see? I think, I could just as easily have written: "I don't think, that all Americans are racists". You would have just quoted: "all Americans are racists" and jumped around in a circle like Rumpelstiltskin and screamed "You said I'm a racist! You're a racist! Racist! Racist!....."

I do not, I repeat do not think, that all Americans are racists. And I'd strongly recommend that you consider taking back what you said about me.

And by the way: I care about my country's past, because I live in this country, and because I'm a historian, who know's that it is a proud country, rich with good history and good culture, and not only "the Nazis".

You have no idea, what you are talking about. And that is pretty obvious. First of all, what I said to Chef counts for you as well. Read and understand my posting.
And secondly, how do you know, which tendencies are prevelant in racist people? And how do you know what are hard facts and what not? It seems to me, that the answer to these questions is: "you do not know".
There are a lot of hard facts about stereotypes, racism, prejudice and so on. You wanna know, how I know this? Because there is research and there are scientific and scholarly studies, inquiries analysis about these things. How about some years of sociology, educational science history and political science?
The ridiculous supposition was on your part, my uneducated friend.

I'm not sure race played a role in this incident as the cop was only able to determine that after the stop...he didn't seem close enough to run the license plate and thereby determine who might be driving the truck.

What the cop saw was an SUV with it's emergency flashers on blowing through stop sign after stop sign and not stopping until it got to the hospital. But that doesn't mean he didn't then decide to disrespect the guy based on race after the stop.

I think after the cop was made aware of the circumstances he was insulting, insensitive, used bad judgment and was completely out of line.

Too many cops don't understand where their job begins and ends which is to enforce traffic laws by way of citation, investigate crimes and apprehend suspects...too many think their jobs extend to meting out their version of justice. That job belongs to the courts and the prosecutors.

I didn't pick out one sentence to take it out of context. I quoted the whole entire thing. If that was an attempt at some sort of humor, it was terrible because it came off as being arrogant and insulting.

"Asian people drive slow, can't pronounce the letter 'L' and have small penises."

Oh, I was just making an exaggerated, satirical and partly ironic comment.
