Aww, thanks meesterperfect! I like staying up late to watch (and sing along with) those time life infomercials...you know, the ones that have all the live performances from the '60s and '70s...I'm wondering how many good clips we'll be able to dig up.

OK, as a card-carrying music geek, I have often pontificated that the three most important musical acts to emerge from the 60s are (in alphabetical order):

The Beatles
Bob Dylan
The Velvet Underground

Now, my non-music geek friends (who tolerate my pontificating with the weariness only true friends will endure) all seem to agree that the Beatles are great, and they usually begrudgingly admit that, while they do not listen to Bob Dylan, he gets enough lip service from other musicians that he's important. But none, and I do mean NONE, of them can comprehend my including the Velvet Underground. They cannot believe that a band that they have never heard of & who never had a "hit single" could possibly be so influential.

I loose lots of friends due to pontificating.... :dunno:

Just about everything from; Genesis, Yes, E.L.P., Pink Floyd, ect. There are far to many to mention, but I do agree, the music from then, is far better then anything current.

I love a good pontificator, at least where music is concerned. I really believe the influence of Dylan has been exaggerated over the years. I regard Simon and Garfunkel as every bit as influential as Dylan....the Brian Wilson part of the Beach Boys is also right up there, in terms of influence.

As for The Beatles, I think John Lennon and George Harrison are genius. Paul and Ringo, not so much. And yes, The Velvet Underground's influence has been criminally ignored by the mainstream music press. They're probably my favorite group of all-time...their self-titled is miles above anything Dylan ever did.

So, I'd add Simon and Garfunkel and The Beach Boys to your list. Probably The Zombies, because it doesn't get much better than Odyssey and Oracle. I also wonder why Elton John hasn't been more influential (or Bernie Taupin, if you want to split hairs). He and Bernie Taupin wrote some damn amazing songs in the early-mid '70s.
