I'm not gonna diss anyone for their musical taste (as much as I might want to, oh say, a thousand times a day) but I am quite happy to make a personal critique based on my tastes and opinion.
The Black Eyed Peas suck. Talentless, marketing generated Incubi, sent out into the world of the Mall shopper to ensure that taste, good judgement and perception of reality remain just where the World Whore Masters want them: safely locked away in the unused part of the average 9-5, 2.4 kids, minvan, debt-drowned Western psyche: the region of our existence that used to do things like think, evaluate, compare, contrast, allow independent actions ......
You know, that part of us we have sold to the Devil in exchange for cookie cutter lives in cookie cutter homes in cookie cooker towns ........
If you think about it, hating the BEP is a revolutionary act. One small way you can tell those running the giant malls that used to have country names and unique identities that, 'NO. I will not submit. I will not paint my house tope; I will not buy 'insurance protection' on things that don't need protecting or insuring ; I will not go on a cruise, or stay in a 'family resort' or move into a 'planned community' or do anything that lets me be incrementally transformed into a drone and moved into the giant hive that somehow passes for 'normal', these days'. We live in a world where we have chosen to let other people make our choices for us.
Fuck That. And fuck the BEP.
And that's all I have to say about that.

I saw Jon in a coffee shop in Red Bank N.J. (next town over from where he lives) a few weeks ago, he was telling people there that he was in negotiations to play the Super Bowl either next year or in 2014 when it's here in NJ!
Knowing the "hip" people who choose these clown acts, you KNOW it's going to be Jay-Z and Alicia Keys for that one. No offense to Jay-Z or anything, but dude, seriously, rap/hip-hop just doesn't appeal to the baby-boomers and older folks who are still the majority demographic. I'd take Bon Jovi over pretty much anything listed in my link, although Mellencamp would probably be high on my list. Whatever the case, ANYTHING they put up next year will have no challenge upping today's massacre.

I had to walk out of the room twice. I thought they were done so I came back into the room...stood there for a moment - really tried to scrape up a shed of tolerance for it, doing my best to take a fair objective standpoint (don't wanna be accused of jes' hatin' on 'em)- and just couldn't stand it. They sounded fucking horrible. I mean absolutely, criminally awful. Sure, they were energetic - but so is a bipolar autistic kid with a bag of sugar. And that's what it was. An extremely expensive, sugar coated rambling shitbag. Thanks NFL.

There's probably a lot of pricks at the superbowl who don't like metal. Anyways, if Metallica was a universally liked band then they would cease to be cool.
But the BEP's are just a horrible choice. I'm not sure who thought that they were well-liked enough to play.

I actually talked to my dad (who's age is around 60, FWIW), who went to a party with my mom and a bunch of work buddies, and he said the whole party made fun of the performance the whole time. Truly a horrid performance. I don't know what was worse - them, or Xtina.

Metallica is a universally recognized act. :2 cents: For my dad to get into them (well, 'Nothing Else Matters' at least) says something about their marketability. They are WAY more marketable than Jay-Z or any rap act for that matter.

Fade to Black is probably their most commercially popular album, although the fan base becomes less diverse as far as their 80's stuff is concerned. I agree though.

You mean the Black album? 'Fade to Black' is a track off Ride the Lightning (a song that I have heard a lot of kids have committed suicide to, BTW). So I take it you aren't really a follower, or you just had a brain fart.
Either way, they are arguably the greatest "rock" band in American history. :2 cents:
