The British Alternative Vote (AV) thread.

vodkazvictim

Why save the world, when you can rule it?
We know the time to vote is here, so lets have a look at those respective yes and no AV campaigns in full.

Yes to AV campaign:
MPs to work harder to earn and keep our support
Your next MP would have to get more than 50% of the vote to be sure of winning. Currently an MP may win with only 1 vote in 3.

A bigger say on who your local MP is
Ranking candidates allows the people more control over who comes first and last

Obsolessence of tactical voting
The AV allows you to vote for who you want, secure in the knowledge that when they're inevitably knocked out, the more realistic and less desirable alternative is chosen.
For example, those who desired to vote Green party, but realised that they would inevitably fail to achieve power, may well have voted conservative, believing "call me dave's" promises of "Greenest government ever!" (HA!) can now vote Green as their priority 1. If the Green party does not achieve power, their second preference will then be considered (but not guaranteed).
Some say that the alternative vote defies the spirit of democracy by requiring voters to vote more than once. This is not true. If you don't like the idea of voting more than once, only vote for one candidate and leave the other boxes blank. Your vote will then function very much in the traditional manner of the first past the post system.

Tackling "jobs for life" culture
Too many MPs have safe seats for life, encouraging complacency. AV can make your MPs do their jobs.

No to AV campaign:

Hey there. You have a way using abbreviations... remember that 'FBW' in a thread about fighter planes? Not everybody knows about the Fly-By-Wire concept, if you can believe that ^^

So better tell us about this 'AV' etc and what THAT is supposed to mean :)

I would have preferred a choice of either, PR (Proportional Representation) or STV (Single Transferable Vote), but I very much doubt voting reform will be on the books for quite some time so I will be voting 'Yes'. AV isn't a great system, but I think it'll be better than what we currently have.

Bitte meine Freunde, Ich Weisse du nicht bist eine dumbkopf, read die thread title.

Lying fucktard, you would have preferred a dictatorship with you in charge and Baconsalt as your secretary (some say that if you perform a Freeones search for Baconsalt 5 times within a certain period of time he will return to Freeones).

Seriously though, you're aware that PR is what led to Hitler in power? Just playing Devil's advocate.
I agree AV isn't great, but will be better.

Anybody, any more thoughts?

NO

AV is a poor substitute for democracy.
In almost all walks of life, if you get more than the person coming in second, you win. AV means that the person coming in second may end up coming first. That is just bollocks.

Except that under the current system, because of tactical voting, many people end up not voting for the person they really want, but somebody else instead.

By what measure do you think we currently live in a democracy? How many election pledges do our politicians fulfill?

We get to choose which liar to put in charge for the next 5 years.
