Obama’s 2009 economic stimulus, a favorite target of Republicans who blame Democrats for the mounting debt, has added $719 billion-6 percent of the total shift, according to the new analysis of CBO data by the nonprofit Pew Fiscal Analysis Initiative. All told, Obama-era choices account for about $1.7 trillion in new debt, according to a separate Washington Post analysis of CBO data over the past decade. Bush-era policies, meanwhile, account for more than $7 trillion and are a major contributor to the trillion-dollar annual budget deficits that are dominating the political debate.

GOPers desperately need to have the stimulus be perceived as a failure since not a single GOP member of the house voted for it and only 3 GOP Senators voted for it.

IMO the stimulus, banking bailouts and auto bailouts saved the economy from totally imploding and hemorrhaging jobs and revenue..at near Depression era rates.

Without them, u/e would still be in double digits IMO.

What else are they going to say or do but :flame: the economy, Obama and Dems....until someone points out that over the same time in Reagan's first term, his numbers were worse...:elaugh:

They've created and fomented this Tea Party sham and now they need to play it for all it's worth....facts be damned.

I'm no Obama apologist but to lay the blame on him while giving a hall pass to the "do nothing" republicans is simply a partisan smokescreen. They are every bit as responsible and as much to blame as Obama and the dems for the present mess in which we find ourselves.

Wake the fuck up, people. Let's face it....our political system has morphed our government into some bizarre caricature of itself that cannot agree nor compromise on anything and cannot (or will not) get anything done....period. In the meantime, those in power are quite content for us to be primarily preoccupied by debating amongst ourselves about who is to blame instead of insisting that they fulfill their promise to us when they took the oath of office. It's a classic case of divide and conquer and it's working extremely well.

Under the present state of affairs, I ask you to please consider this line of reasoning proposed over 2 hundred years ago from some guy named Jefferson:

It's time for a new government, folks. This one ain't working....and I mean that literally once August 2 has come and gone if (or perhaps more inevitably appropriate, as) this nonsense continues.

Man, Bush really fucked us over. And we're still paying for it today. I wish Obama could bring us out of it but the GOP have made the political environment so TOXIC that nothing will get done.

Jag..partisanship and politics isn't the problem some of you seem to think it is. Partisanship and politics is the way either side gets the people who claim to be in the middle of the road who don't care enough to follow issues closely off the sidelines and choose a point to support.

Incorrigibility and extremism in politics and apathy in the electorate are the real problems not partisan rancor or battling on political terms.

But since you brought it up....what form of g'ment are you in favor of tossing this one out in favor of?

And, "I don't know but this one doesn't work." doesn't answer the question.

You have to realize...it's is in the interests of some to create this perception of a broken g'ment. The g'ment isn't broken....what's broken is an electorate too lazy and to follow who, said, did and does what in their g'ment...Then comes out from the sidelines on occasion to protest the broken g'ment.

What's broken is an electorate so lazy and ignorant that it doesn't stay on top of those it elects to do what it is they elected them to do.

In light of that reality what do you suggest... a form of g'ment that takes control away from an apathetic, disengaged, lazy, ignorant electorate?:cool:

The politicians just play to that reality.

Based on policies in place at the time, the Congressional Budget Office projected in 2001 that the country could pay off its debt by the year 2008 and by 2011 have a $2.3 trillion surplus. We could've had a budget surplus by now:facepalm:

Would that be relevant or as significant if we'd just paid for the ensuing conflicts with generated revenue or even repealed egg-tra until we understood the fiscal impact?

Point being is if we were being fiscally aware what you cite wouldn't matter. Just because 9/11 happened and we engaged in wars doesn't mean our debt has to go up or we have to put the entire endeavor on the company credit card.

I'll make a prediction; Trident will now sidestep the question and respond with something totally irrelevant to the point, if at all.

Hubby puts off hunting trip to Utah and thoughts on buying a hot rod and even picks up a part-time job.

Wife puts her pottery lessons on hold and suspends adding more crystal elephants to her collection fold.

As a result when the baby stork delivers little Johnny...the financial goals and plans the Does had before baby John don't miss a beat and their dough is in just as good a shape as it was before the little addition.

Deficits don't matter

Yeah..that was a good one too.

John and Jane determined to turn little Johnny into a 'spoilt' little brat...accede to his every whim. Soon their $8000 combined monthly income is eclipsed by their $10000 monthly expenses.

They cover the $2K deficit with their credit cards and personal line of credit. Tax season rolls around and they go see their regular guy at H&R Crock to see how much they're 'getting back'. Their tax guy looks over their finances and wonders why they're not flush and why they have so much debt and finds that they're running a $2K shortfall every month. He says to them, unless you find a way to cut or cover this deficit you guy's are going to end up bankrupt.

To this Jane says to their tax guy, 'Cheney said Reagan proved deficits don't matter'.
