The early german tribes prayed to a goddess named "Ostara". Her sign was the rabit. The rabit and eggs were (and still are in some regions of this world) signs for life and vitality. The christian religion just mixed it up a little. For the pagan germans it was the new beginning for the cycle of life.

Not really, those people are well aware that there is no such thing as an Easter bunny or a Santa Claus, but usually play along because of the kids and because it means they get a day off from work.

It becomes disturbing when people actually star believing in such things, then the rational people would hit them on the head with a frying pan just as hard as they would hit someone who believes Jesus got resurrected 3 days after he died.
