This is turning out to be a strange, almost boring NFL season thus far...The Pats stink. The Colts stink. The Chargers are inconsistent. The Saints have no D again. The Titans are too boring to watch and take seriously. The Jets stink with Favre. The Bungles, Browns, Ravens all stink. The Texans and Falcons are hard to take seriously. The Rams and Raiders are embarrasments. The Cowboys are far away the best team. Although the Giants COULD'VE been the best team if Umenoyrie and Stahan were playing.

If ESPN had on their old NFL Primetime show Sunday afternoons...I'd never watch a single NFL game. The highlights would be good enough for me.

On the other hand....this College Football season is already off to an awesome start!! Great games...great teams..great players...every week...

Wow, I disagree with that. I think that this season is very entertaining thus far. I'm glad that the "better" teams aren't doing so well. I'm tired of watching the same 4 or 5 teams always winning, always dominating, always taking up TV time.

Seriously, last year, it seemed like I was almost forced to watch every single Cowboys, Patriots and Colts game. I never got to see games like Denver vs. San Diego or Pittsburgh vs. Philadelphia. This year, I finally get to see some good games, instead of obvious blow outs by the "best teams".

I'm happy to see teams like the Bills and the Titans getting a little bit of positive attention. I'm glad I don't have to hear about how great the Colts are or how unstoppable the Patriots are this year (so far anyway).

:2 cents:

So you think a league filled with 10-6 and 9-7 teams at the top is great? That's what this season feels like (taking the Cowboys out of it, they're probably a 14 win team). The upstart teams..Buffalo, Tennessee, Atlanta, Arizona...all have 9-7 written all over them...

Yes. It means that the teams are more competitve. It's better than having 3 or 4 teams that have 13+ win seasons and then a bunch of 5-11 teams.

What's the fun in watching games where you almost know what team is going to win? You might as well be watching the Pittsburgh Steelers play a high school football team. That's no fun to me.

i also like the idea of a bunch of teams winning between 7 and 10 games it means longer playoff races which makes for better football than normal. the bills, falcons and titians are taking advantage of the schedule being in there favor from the start

Last year the NFC was the JV of the NFL, but now it is clearly the better conference. A lot has to do with key injuries to teams in the AFC, but still impressive.

Many people are blaming Matt Cassel for the Patriots sucking at home last weekend, but the defense was the real problem in that game. Matt Cassel sucked, but the defense couldn't even stop that stone age offense the Dolphins were putting on the field. What a bad start for me, I predicted the Pats to be a 10 win team without Brady and I also said that the Giants will not win more than 5 games. :o

Would you hit it?
Matt Millen FINALLY got the axe today!!!! about fucking time! i should have been a front office person for the Lions. where else could you be such a blatant fuck-up and still keep your job? at least he got it right with Calvin Johnson!

The Lions are still going to suck. Millen wasn't their biggest problem. Their biggest problem is that they're the Lions and they don't have Barry Sanders anymore. Ever since he left, that team has been complete crap, and that was way before Millen even entered the picture.

I agree, but getting rid of him is the 1st step to improving the team.

I gotta disagree. He took a 9-7 team and now it sucks. He forced the coach (Stere M.) to play Harrington when Harrington sucked (according to the ex-coach). And he spent 4 very high draft picks all on WR's. How if that doesn't show his ineptitude....

Sorry man. I think he WAS their biggest problem.

BTW Barry Sanders is still my favorite all-time player to watch

9-7 isn't going to win you the NFC Norris. The Lions have sucked for years. When was the last time they even made the playoffs?

I'll admit that Millen was a problem, but you could say the same thing about the Dolphins and their management. They have Parcells pretty much running the show now, and they still suck. Yeah, they beat the Patriots, but that's only one game.

I know it will all take time and only time will tell what's going to happen, but the Lions have been crap for a lot longer than Millen has been (was) their GM.

Matt Millen:

- before Lions, zero experience with coaching or scouting at any level
- was hired as team president and GM
- was 2nd highest paid GM in NFL
- 03-05 drafts spend three high first round draft picks all on WR's
- his first head coach hiring Marty M, had zero NFL coaching or co-ordinater experience
- since Millen arrived team is 31-84 overall and 8-50 on the road (Detroit was 9-7 when he took them over).

This guy was a great player, but a terrible GM.

I could also mention that at least three of his first round draft picks were enormous bust, with one, Charles Rodgers being epic to the point where one might have a legitimate claim to call him the second biggest bust in history behind only Ryan Leaf. It's even worse when you consider that the Lions were so bad that they had extremely high first round picks in Millen's entire time with the team. Pretty much nobody could have screwed it up that bad with those kinds of picks, and that's pretty much the only reason they have Calvin Johnson, Williams and Ernie Sims the only people on the team that are worth building a team around. There has been virtually no offensive line development since he has been there. There hasn't been a decent quarterback since he took over, and it's kind of hard to tell if Harrington was just that sucky or if the Lions ruined him. Kitna just isn't going to get it done. He's a backup playing as a starter. The running game has been non-existent because of the previously stated offensive line, backs that haven't been that great, and their inability to stay close in games. Their defense has never been that great. This isn't a team like the Ravens or the Bears where their offenses has often been bad but their defense always gives them at least a chance to win. The entire team is bad. Millen has been responsible (Or at least had a good portion of the responsiblity) for the coaches and all the front office personnel whom he either undercut all the time or he picked people that suck as much as he did. It's obvious the Lions have virtually no quality people at talent evaluation. Even their non-first round picks have been relatively poor since his time as general manager. They have a hard time getting good free agents, and when they do they pay too much for people that aren't worth it. Discipline has been erratic and inconsistent with the players. They brought in people they shouldn’t have, but let people that were good go, Bly and Shawn Rodgers come to mind just this year. To be fair I think all the head coaches the Lions have had haven't been that bad. I think most of the blame falls on Millen and other front office people. If Arizona pulls it out this year and becomes at least a semi-decent team in the near future Detroit is going to pretty much become the crappiest team in the history of the league.

i hope the fords do something smart this time but it's not likely. the only team worse than detroit right now is the rams but i could see both of them going 0-16 this year
