Sweet, I could use this thread. Long story short...
Last week, I realized that my computer had been infected with "Windows Anti-Virus Pro". Well, I Google searched for a way to get rid of it and I found some methods that people said would work. The method I used was the following...
I downloaded Spyware Doctor and ran it. Once the infection was found, I had the program delete it. But, a lot of websites said that I also had to manually delete certain "hidden" files that were associated with Windows Anti-Virus Pro, which wouldn't be detected by any programs. There was a list of all the files which needed to be deleted, so I got to working on it. One of the files was "rundll32.exe". Anyway, I deleted the appropriate file which was associated with Windows Anti-Virus Pro, but I accidentally deleted some rundll32 files that were associated with other programs. I didn't realize it until an hour or so after I did it, but, ever since then, a lot of my programs won't open. I know that rundll32.exe is needed in order to open programs, but I can't figure out how to fix it.
For example, when I double click on the Windows Media Player icon on my desktop, it brings up the window that says "Choose the program you want to use to open the file", which is followed by a list of a bunch of various programs. Ironically, one of the programs is Windows Media Player. And, just for information's sake, if I choose Windows Media Player as the program I want to use to open the file, Windows Media Player loads. But, it tries to play my Windows Media Player file as if it is a movie or music file.
I'm confused as fuck and I don't know what to do.
Oh, two other things...
I can't do a system restore either. So, that option is out of the question. When I try to run a system restore, it won't even open. Also, I don't want to format my hard drive or reinstall Windows XP onto my laptop. I mean, I will if I have to, but I'm obviously trying to avoid that option, as I don't want to lose all of the data that's currently on my hard drive.
Thanks in advance for anyone who can offer up any sort of advice.
