^^^Did the virus also prevent you from going to certain sites, like anything related to virus protection and updates or online virus scanning/removal? Whatever I had a few months ago did that, plus whenever I'd click on a Google link, it would take me to some ad site.
I ended up having to do a complete reinstall. Even the IT guy at work couldn't figure out how to get the bastard out of my system.

That's when you know it's bad. The viruses know what programs can kill it and prevent them from ever installing/loading
