Don't know who said it, but it is one of my favorite quotes.
"Political correctness.
A doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end".
yeah sensitivity is an issue, but I think the real issue is embarrassment. Sigmund Freud had a concept of "the Return Of The Repressed" meaning no matter how hard you try to bury something embarrassing, emotionally damaging, it will resurface.
somewhere at some point through out the entirety of history - someone or some group did something really stupid, and covered it up, the people who got screwed over by that stupid action retaliated in the same way with an action though equally stupid probably did not have the immediate level of damage the original dumb action took, but opted as a clever means to spread it out over a long deterioration.
This usually ends up in a pissing contest over who is the bigger victim sinking into the pit of disrepair, making the cry baby mentality priority over everything else including practical everyday knowledge / education.
so instead of admitting that a particular group is doing something stupid, they try to repress the stupidity, usually by damning others for doing the everyday normal, because to clean up the mess would mean actually getting their hands dirty. so how do you clean up a mess with out doing it your self but making others do it for you with out telling them what it is you want them to do?
how far long into covering up willful ignorance can one get before it becomes to embarrassing to admit that the slow spread out damage one is doing can be just as bad as the sudden damage done?
I like the quote from Full Metal Jacket - " it's a huge shit sandwich, and we're all gonna have to take a bite".
