At least if you run out of gas you don't fall out of the air and you could jump out of a vehicle without a parachute.

I think it's pretty comforting to know that a plane can be landed by a mere mortal in an unlikely emergency. I've wondered if the control tower would be able to talk a person of average intelligence through it.
