U.S. takes more steps toward a leery Iran

WASHINGTON, April 8 (Reuters) - The Obama administration took another tentative step toward better ties with Iran on Wednesday and became a full participant in nuclear talks with Tehran, but the Islamic Republic showed no sign of a detente.

The decision to join future talks with other major powers over Iran's nuclear program is part of President Barack Obama's plan to deal directly with Tehran on key issues and a reversal of the departed Bush administration's isolation policy.

Maybe someone realized that deterrence, threats, embargos and ignorance didn't help at all.
Well, there are different ways to approach countries like Iran. Bringing enough energy, food, water and other consumer goods to the impoverished population (for example through an atomic energy program) or establishing communication channels and the exchange of culture, knowledge and education with the "outside world" could help to accelerate the process towards a free market and eventually democracy and everything that comes along with it. Even if the government won't budge, the people will sooner or later know. That's of course a very lengthy and complicated process, but it has worked before in other and more powerful countries (and I don't mean nation-building like in Iraq, that's something different).
But that remains to be seen...
