Underground art? Amazing pictures show beauty of Swedish subway network

It gives new meaning to the phrase 'underground art movement' - but for those of us who trudge alongside walls covered with peeling posters, these pictures of the subway system in Sweden are a revelation.

Often described as 'the longest art exhibition in the world', the roof of one Stockholm station is red-lit, making it appear to be covered in billowing flames, and another boasts ancient-looking statues carved out of the tunnel walls.

Another has also taken a classical theme, with foliage entwined around pillars; while others are more modern, with rainbows painted over the rough-hewn rock surface and multi-coloured arrows pointing passengers in the right direction.

Animal: The countryside theme is continued with a trompe l'oeil window gazing out on to an outsized animal and house

Journey's end: Stadion (stadium) subway station has been painted all the colours of the rainbow

The artwork is, according to transport operator SL, part of a long tradition of public art for public transport, with some 90 of the 100 stations in the network decorated by around 140 artists.

And it's not just static painting and sculpture on offer at the subways - art films have been shown at Skanstull metro station since 2004.

Bus and train stations are also decorated, although SL says that the art has 'heavy demands' place on it, as it must be 'washable, durable, weather proof and sometimes even have a functional role'.

And the benefits are not just to make the daily commute a little more pleasant; the company believes it also helps travellers find their way - and reduces crime.

Their website states: 'The art makes the stations perceived as more beautiful, safer and it helps to make the trip into something more than just a transport between two places.

'But art is also important to give each station its own identity, and thereby make it easier to navigate in the transport network.

'We also believe that art helps reduce criminal damage and vandalism.'
