US soldier charged with murder of five comrades in Iraq

BAGHDAD (AFP) – A US soldier who allegedly sprayed his comrades with lethal gunfire at an American base in Baghdad has been charged with five counts of murder and one of assault, an army spokesman said Tuesday.

Sergeant John M. Russell, whose unit is preparing to leave Iraq within months, allegedly shot dead five colleagues at a mental health counselling clinic in Camp Liberty near Baghdad's international airport on Monday.

thats seriously fucked . im very proud of the men and women that fight for our freedom and to be killed by our kind is so fucked up . but i heard it is tough over there alot of people couldnt handle it and went nuts. but thats no reason to take an innocent life

We'll have to wait for more of the facts to come out to see if PTSD or some other factor was involved.

It's tragic nonetheless.
