Veteran Ray McGovern Bloodied and Arrested At Clinton Speech

As Secretary of State Hillary Clinton gave her speech at George Washington University yesterday condemning governments that arrest protestors and do not allow free expression, 71-year-old Ray McGovern was grabbed from the audience in plain view of her by police and an unidentified official in plain clothes, brutalized and left bleeding in jail. She never paused speaking. When Secretary Clinton began her speech, Mr. McGovern remained standing silently in the audience and turned his back. Mr. McGovern, a veteran Army officer who also worked as a C.I.A. analyst for 27 years, was wearing a Veterans for Peace t-shirt.

Is it irony or hypocrisy?

Neither.

You have the right to peaceably assemble and protest. This incident doesn't contradict that right.

I couldn't see what actions he engaged in that caused his removal. But the simple reality is, those charged with protecting and ensuring the safety of public officials in settings like this are going to err on the side of caution.

If you're acting suspicious enough...they're not going to wait for you to actually do something potentially dangerous before they act.

In Iraq a journalist was able to throw not one but two shoes at Bush. What if he somehow managed to have something more dangerous? It would have been too late if those charged with protecting Clinton waited to see what else this guy would have attempted.

If you want to protest something in the US, there are ways to do it...this isn't one of them.

Certainly he was asked to leave before it got physical. If you're asked to leave and you don't cooperate..they're not just going to say, Oh well, enjoy the rest of the speech. You're going to get hauled out.
