We want to buy a lcd tv but there are so many, can someone offer some advice?

1) forget the brand, there are only a handful f companies that manufacture the actual panels inside the TVs... so check the image quality in-store, and read reviews on the web, but don't pay extra for the brand. [sic.]

.

Astute point(s)

Stick with Freeones
5) plasma TVs are cheaper and have nicer colours (they can produce true blacks, for example), but they usually have much lower resolutions than LCDs. they can also suffer from burn-in. i'd get one if it was only to watch movies in a home theater setting, but not for regular TV viewing.

All of this is true, but their lifespan in hours is drastically reduced or it was when I bought my tv about a year ago. The screen burn in thing is terrible on older models heard its getting better though. Also the Screens are protected by a glass fixture on the outside (since the screen is little gas bubbles you dont really want to touch it) but this can cause real bad glare if in a bright room with direct sunlight or just light from a lamp/ceiling bulb. Just a few things to keep in mind.

If you wish to live wisely, ignore sayings including this one.
6) almost forgot - cables. here at a normal electronics store an HDMI cable costs upwards of $40, and the 'tards at best buy swear that the image quality is even better when you pay $100 for a "monster cable". i bought mine at a supermarket for $8.99, and it works perfectly. a cable is a cable is a cable; it either works or is broken. so don't get ripped off.

Monster Cables are the biggest scam going. They are absolutely no different that any other brand of cables.I think that they must be in collusion with the company that makes them because every chance that they get, they are trying to shove them down someone's throat at a huge mark up.

$40 is still too much to be paying for cable too.Do what I did and get them from EB Games,or any other game store, used.I payed $20 for mine, and they are just as good as new.I guess $9 at the grocery store is even better though, but in case they don't have them,EB or GameStop is a good place to get them.
