Hmmm .....

The Atomic bomb.

Detrimental to society, but has any one thing changed the face of the modern world other than the atomic/hydrogen bomb? It changed the world, the nature of war changed totally and political relations changed forever. The world has not been the same since.

It's not a great invention in terms of it's effect on the planet, but an important one none the less.
