Who wants to live forever? Scientist sees aging cured.

(Reuters) - If Aubrey de Grey's predictions are right, the first person who will live to see their 150th birthday has already been born. And the first person to live for 1,000 years could be less than 20 years younger.

A biomedical gerontologist and chief scientist of a foundation dedicated to longevity research, de Grey reckons that within his own lifetime doctors could have all the tools they need to "cure" aging -- banishing diseases that come with it and extending life indefinitely.

"I'd say we have a 50/50 chance of bringing aging under what I'd call a decisive level of medical control within the next 25 years or so," de Grey said in an interview before delivering a lecture at Britain's Royal Institution academy of science.

"And what I mean by decisive is the same sort of medical control that we have over most infectious diseases today."

De Grey sees a time when people will go to their doctors for regular "maintenance," which by then will include gene therapies, stem cell therapies, immune stimulation and a range of other advanced medical techniques to keep them in good shape.

I like to believe that there has already been a person who lived past 150 years. Hell, even 250 years. His name is Li Ching-Yuen, and evidentally he has a Wikipedia page right here.

No, I want to be able to be with my family again in the next life.

If it's true, I would assume that he may have had some type of mutated gene that made him age more slowly, much like Progeria, which has the opposite effect. It's very intriguing.

Conspiracy...

People have already lived that long and longer.

That's one of many reasons why this society is not even close to the best this world has ever seen.

The Highlander. :D

The article is interesting, but I'm sure I won't be around.

I was going to say that! :cussing: '

Glad I won't live to see this. The only way this works is if we stop procreating. Otherwise, I still think it will be possible to starve to death no matter how old science might enable you to live.

You think that everything is odd.

I believe JRR Tolkien had a point when he wrote that the greatest gift Men were given was the gift of death. Why would I want to live long enough to see how fucked up things get 300 or 400 years from now? That would just prolong the bitterness and pain that life can be.

Sure  We should all be living over 100 now.
Yes life expectancy lengthens, in part due to scientific developments but the notion of 'curing' aging seems a futile quest. Cellular degradation is a natural occurrence & of course if a 'cure' is found it will only be available to those that can afford it.

You think that everything is odd.
Only some things, such as people that want to be eaten by wolves so they can become one of them. :rofl2:

what the fuck you lookin at?
why? The world is already overpopulated. Death is natures population control. Oh well, guess we'll just need more natural disasters!!!
