Why are we Fascinated with serial killers?

yeah I guess some people have this idol worship fascination with serial killers. I sure don't, I'd fuck them up and stomp their brains at the first chance I got and incinerate their remains and forget them.

But I do have this affinity your talking about, not for serial killers, but for cocaine traffickers and mobsters. I have a fascination for the high stakes drug trade and organized crime. But these guys are different. They generally only kill those within their own industry, and those people definitely know the risks when entering that line of work.

I also have the same fascination with drug dealing and the so called gangsta life style; when I was younger I was myself was headed in that direction until my friends started getting killed and you had to watch your back everytime you left your house.. I was never a in the class of a kingpen; but our crew had street credibility and we had a reputation around the city.. so I relized I was on a one way collision course with my grave or my jail cell; so I changed my mind about staying in the game.. and I now I know I made the right choice.. because ALLOT of my friends are either DEAD or in JAIL.. so I escaped the disasterous possibility of ruining my life..

I don't know if serial killers have that type of awareness or concience; but I would immagine their pretty much screwed from jump cuz they have already killed; so if they get caught their gonna be living in prison for the rest of their lives; so they just continue until they get caught.. they probably don't care after the 1st kill? they turn into the devil and can't stop or help themselves? :dunno:

Of course, what's scarier then an unknown killer stalking the streets? It's a shame alot of movies about serial killers tend to be slasher fics. A community in the middle of a serial killer's spree would be a great setting for a movie.

(I'd just like to point out that when I typed community I got a really freaky feeling that someone was behind me. But there was no one... I think...)

....I am a little intrigued about serial killers based on the how , when and why they commit the crimes they do but I am extremely thrilled when they get caught and then try to explain their actions as to "I couldn't help it.".

The BTK Killer was prime example of the brazeness he exemplified by sitting through his interviews in his "matter-of-fact" bravado and looking like he was proud of his accomplishments....The Fucker was unforgivable in his deeds but was he sorry for what he did or de he really want to be caught?

There are many differences between Serial Killers but the only thing they have in common is that they killed for the thrill and society should put these bastards out for good instead of leeting them live in a prison for upteen years before execution.

I find them fascinating because they are different than the norm that most people are used to. We are fascinated by whats different. Most of us could never kill anyone, much less up to 100 or more people, and even if we did kill someone the guilt would most likely drive us to insanity or to at the very least tun ourselves in. I think the lack of guilt, and how they can kill without any emotion, and still live a normal life in front of the public is just amazing. I just love finding out what goes through these peoples minds, and how they can kill so many people without even thinking twice.

It might be a simpler explanation than some think. Perhaps they get more attention because they are people that are different than the norm, even among others that kill. Perhaps it's that difference we take an interest in. If you look at almost anybody that gets a lot of attention they usually have something about them that makes them different than most other average people.

Give me examples of people that get a lot of attention because, 'they usually have something about them that makes them different than most other average people.' This is excluding, 'serial killrs,' of course.

How so? Those "skills" are actually pretty simplistic, particularly if you've already performed them once.

It doesn't take a Rhodes scholar to choose a controllable crime scene and figure out how to dispose of a body.

I agree to the extent that serial killers often, if not always, are strangers to their victims. That's the toughest obstacle in terms of solving theses crimes.
You must concede that the application of today's *modern forensic sciences make for a much greater challenge for these loons. Of course, the one's in the spirit of this thread are more or less from the slide rule days lol !

I guess we both differ on our views and that's fine with me. But let me ask you this: have you ever heard the statement that one reason why serial killers keep on killing is that they want to get caught? I do agree that some serial killers lack intelligence but some don't. The ones that don't leave clues, tracks, keep everything low profile, those are the smart ones. I forget who it was, but one killer wrote on one of his victim's walls "Please catch me. I can't help myself." Is that stupidity because he left clues or is that intelligence because he's trying to help the police find him and stop the killings?

I've read quite alot of true crime murder mysteries and I'm disgusted by these serial killers who seem to come in all shapes, sizes, colors and all walks of life

While I agree with you. I just find it interesting to know about these crazy fucks, some of them are mentally NOT with us.. While the others who DO know what they are doing, those are the ones that your statement rings true about.

Although its utterly morbid & macabre, I find the movies to be quite entertaining & thought provoking. although I certainly wish these things never happened to the real victims in real life, but unfortunately allot of these MOVIES we watch & stories we read are based on true stories as we all unfortunately all know. & as much as, You or I, wish it was just Sci-Fi entertainment, unfortunately they are real stories that need to be told.

p.s. When watching these movies & reading these stories (I) we feel for the victims & root for them to escape, somehow beat the odds, overcome serious disadvantages, and by any means necessary survive the hopeless to finally end the madness by making the guilty pay for all of their crimes. :2 cents:
