Why? (For SF RPG or Lovecraft fans)

Dawn

I'm so great I'm jelous of myself.
Why?

Why there have been so few SF themed RPG over the years in videogames? I have been gaming since the mid '70s (Intellivision anyone? :D) and there is like one science-fiction themed RPG published each 2 or 3 years :(

Moreover, now that there is plenty of MMORPG nowadays, very few are SFish... If i could, i would make a World of StarCraft based on the World of WarCraft engine. Imagine the humans broken in several factions, each fighting the other, as well as fighting the Zergs and the Protoss. Imagine an instance where the end boss is a Cerebrate!

Why?

Why there have been so few lovecraftian games? Now that the survival-horror games are a trend, and Lovecraft universe is all about survival-horror, why there isnt any lovecraftian themed games out there?

Besides Bethesda and their awesome Call Of Cthulu: Dark Corners Of The Earth (if you can manage the ankward controls), no one else took time to develop anything in the past 5 or so years...

Now imagine a lovecraftian survival-horror MMORPG. With instances and lovecraftian related loot like the ultimate Necronomicon as the most powerfull (and dangerous) artefact hanging somewhere in end game!

Why?

Honestly, I think it's because the average person can identify with a Tolkien type fantasy world or a modern setting vs. Lovecraftian horror and sci-fi.

There are a few sci-fi MMOs out there. Starwars, the Matrix, Eve Online. I couldn't tell you if they're any good or not since I haven't ever gotten past the free trials in anything and I always go back to EQ.

PC games, I couldn't tell you about. I really don't have the patience...heck. I've owned Bloodlines for years and get so frustrated with the limitations of the game...this is after playing Vampire the Masquerade since it was released in 1990!

No, if you want Lovecraftian and Sci-fi type games go for the good old pen and paper gaming. CoC, Cyberpunk, TORG, Shadowrun, Savage Worlds (a lot of good sci-fi/cthulhu settings for the system), Steampunk (League of Extraordinary Gentleman type setting), Cyclopean (lovecraftian setting), Future Shadows, and there are of course tons and tons of indi settings out there in this genre. The best thing about pnp games...there are no constraints of the world and you can make ANYTHING with a Lovecraftian twist. :)

I am such a geek.
