Why isn't Soccer popular in America?

At the 90th minute, the ref makes it known how much stoppage time will be added. A side judge stands on the sideline and holds up a electric scoreboard thingy displaying the amount of time being put back on and its usually around 3-5 minutes.

I don't buy that the U.S. is not one of the top teams...currently 14th in the world, according to FIFA. A good result in the Algeria game, and they can only move up. Here are the 4 teams ahead of them: 10th-Croatia, 11th-Russia, 12th-Egypt, 13th-Greece (all teams not in the World Cup, w/ Greece practically out). So the Top 10 is within reach.

Soccer/football is the most popular sport in most of the 200 or so countries ranked lower than the U.S...which is probably the point of this whole thread.

Contrary to what some of you boners are saying about Soccer, it's one of the funnest games to play. And you can't be some uncoordinated, unathletic piglet. Nevertheless, I can understand that some of you just don't take to the game. No harm no foul.

Nothing, and I mean nothing, is funner than flying down the ice at about 30mph and laying some guy out flat on the ice though. You know, us hockey players know what that feels like, and probably like me a lot of the hockey players went through that phase - when all you wanna do is hit and try to put guys in the ICU.

Probably my two favorite team sports and then has to come MLB, followed by golf and tennis. :thefinger I can kick some ass in 21 as well, but I just don't play much b-ball anymore.

By the way, to make a different point...the U.S. women's soccer team currently is the world's top ranked team (followed by Germany, then Brazil). The U.S. women's team has won gold medals and the World Cup more than once. But no one asks, "why aren't women's sports popular in the whole world?"

Yes, the US women's team is the best. It's odd that Europe seems more progressive than the States but we to be the best in women's athletics, period. Softball, Hockey, Soccer, Golf, Tennis, basketball...the Americans represent on the women's side.

i think its because we invest so much into our women morso then other countries..

It can be an acquired taste. Especially when we only get like one MLS game a freakin month, Stateside. Some of the Spanish channels you can get a game, but it's hard to follow all the European squads and all the damn leagues over there. Especially when I'm watching puck, tennis or golf most of the year anyway - or the O'Reilly Factor and Red Eye.

Soccer never caught on in America because we have 3 other sports that are more interesting to watch (Football, Basketball, Hockey). We also have baseball, which is about as exciting as watching paint dry, but for some reason, a lot of Americans like that too.

I would vote for a little of each option. IMO, it hasn't been marketed properly for whatever reason... probably more to do with big-time Americana sports revenues than anything else. If they could sell it I'm sure they'd sell it.

Boring because you get 0-0 games
I have seen 0-0 games that have been anything but boring - having been on my seat throughout seeing shot after shot saved by keeper or defenders on both sides. Frustrated? Yes, Bored No!

Football is just kicking a ball into a net
In the same way the American Football is just moving a ball over a line, or basketball is just throwing a ball into a hoop or golf is just getting a small ball into a small hole.

It's not as fast paced as US Games
What like in American football where there is 10 seconds of action followed by 30 seconds of nothing happening? Do me a favour!

Americans, on the whole, do not understand the game because they are not brought up with it, in the same way that Europeans (in general) do not understand American Football. It's more of a culture thing.

Not through any fault of his own, but because he was not brought up on soccer. (I use the word soccer, as it is in fact correct - the usage comes from Association Football, back in the late 1800's, which differentiated it from Rugby Football aka Rugger).

I think Johan made the point that rugby is more popular in SA, Australia and NZ. In SA, football (soccer) is in fact more popular than rugby amongst the whole population. The racial make up of rubgy teams is predominately European (although that is changing slowly), and football is mainly African.
