my theory is it's instinctive...strength in numbers, less risk of attack in a group than singular, though it's less applicable in MOST settings these days it is still relevant in certain places, settings, groups etc but mostly it's a comforting thing as well as a social thing...obviously in the past risks of assault via humans or animals would've been greater so women would have stuck in pairs at least wherever they went if possible...that's my thoughts anyway, seems plausible
