Wii U: first hands-on with Nintendo's new console

I've mixed feelings. It looks like gaming is about to become a whole lot more personal and even more interactive, an idea I like.
However, one of the very good things about the original Wii remote is the freedom it allows. For the most part, I have used the Wii Fit, and I cannot see it being quite as efficient with a much larger remote. Same goes for some of the other more physical games, like baseball, tennis, bowling, et al. I can see them releasing a secondary, smaller remote after the console has been out for a while - perhaps an added feature to the next generation Wii U Fit.

The part in this video where they set the thing on the floor when they are playing golf and it shows the call in the sand was pretty cool.

i thought it was a handheld device. i skimmed though the video a bit.

i like my wii but i dont see that in my future. im still pissed about them putting out that wii motion extension thing. why should i have to buy another part to make it do what it should do?

FreeOnes is pumping through my veins!
Ok I didn't bother to look at any thing posted on this thread and I was wondering how much this thing is gonna cost??

I liked the idea of the inventory screen but this is hardly innovative...it's something the original PSP was thought of eventually doing in things like racing games where you could use the PSP as a review mirror. It was also attempted on iirc the Dreamcast. The controllers had screens and they thought about using those for picking plays in football games etc...

I felt the golfing thing they demo'd was neat but ultimately unnecessary. The Chinese star throwing was neat too but it was a rail shooter which would be horrible (look at Star Wars Kinect).

I think the controller is setting out to solve something that isn't broken. Leaving it to be a neat idea but ultimately not worth it I'm afraid. Even if it works well I don't look forward to looking away from my TV to my lap for inventory when I could have most if not all of my inventory items hotkeyed and displayed in the corners of my TV HUD. That's sorta the reason why the DS has the screens so close together...

I'll hold on any final judgments but so far I'm not seeing many positives.

No price point yet and they are really only showing the remote not the console itself. Reggie did mention it is 1080p though.

FreeOnes turned me straight!
last time a system decided to release a new console when no one else did and include a massive controller, it didn't end to well for sega.....
nintendo needs to secure better writers for games to secure new franchises (other than the 3 or 4 they have) and allow people to play the old fashioned way and the new way both. thats what's so lame about the wii (imo)

OK, now that I see it in action, it makes a bit more sense. Seems the smaller Wii remote is still in use, as well as the numchucks - both which make appearances in the video.
Looking a lot cooler.

Never argue with a fool. People might not know the difference.
All the features to me just sound like they are jazzed up to make the machine sound better than it actually is. That's marketing for you I suppose. I don't see me buying into this one. My Wii has sat there now for nearly 8 months untouched. I am not paying money for a WII: U juat for it to sit there and collect dust like the Wii. A waste of money this company's products are, as far as I go anyway. No doubt the average joe on the street who doesn't have a scooby about gaming will buy it and think it's the greatest item ever. Kind of like what they did with the Wii. It was bought by more people who were not gamers than actual gamers.

You can't have everything! Where would you put it?!
Seems to complicated for me. I like my controllers to have no more then 3 buttons on it. lol. Sega Genesis style.

That was another reason I think why the Saturn sank too. Control pads were advancing with D-pads and more buttons and the occasional thumb stick. The Saturn was more or less a Megadrive control pad fitted to a newer machine. Not a smart move.
