Do The Amish Vaccinate? Indeed They Do, AND Their Autism Rates May be Lower

I just read, for the umpteenth time, a statement that "the Amish don't vaccinate, and that's why there are no Amish people with autism." This statement draws, in part, from claims by Age of Autism writer Dan Olmsted - and, at least in this case, Mr. Olmsted is wrong. I got my first inkling that this myth was, in fact, a myth, when I read this piece in the Combatting Autism from Within website:

- The idea that the Amish do not vaccinate their children is untrue,” says Dr. Kevin Strauss, MD, a pediatrician at the CSC. “We run a weekly vaccination clinic and it’s very busy.” He says Amish vaccinations rates are lower than the general population’s, but younger Amish are more likely to be vaccinated than older generations.

Strauss also sees plenty of Amish children showing symptoms of autism. “Autism isn’t a diagnosis - it’s a description of behavior. We see autistic behaviors along with seizure disorders or mental retardation or a genetic disorder, where the autism is part of a more complicated clinical spectrum.” Fragile X syndrome and Retts is also common among the clinic’s patients.

Strauss said the clinic treats “syndromic autism”, where autism as part of a more complicated clinical spectrum that can include mental retardation, chromosomal abnormalities, unusual facial features, and short stature, as well as Fragile X syndrome. “We see quite a few Amish children with Fragile X,” he said.

That about.com article is a spin. First of all I was talking about Amish colonies that DON'T vaccinate. The ones that haven't succumbed to the bio terror that is vaccines.

I usually prefer the Dead Parrot as an analogy. Trying to tell an anti-vaxer or any other conspiracy theorist that they are full of shit is akin to Cleese trying to tell Palin that the parrot is no more... that it has ceased to be... it's expired and gone to meet its maker... this(!) is a late parrot! It's a stiff. Bereft of life, it rests in peace. If you hadn't nailed it to the perch it would be pushing up the daisies. It's run down the curtain and joined the chior invisible. True. It's a much better analogy. I just tried to refer to the Monthy Python-level of discussions like these where things only get... nowhere, except maybe being idiotic and frustrating for the ones involved (you guys), and hillarious for us (the readers). If you know what I mean.

Yes, on looking even closer we find that the guy that started this whole idiotic scare was not only doing invasive unethical stuff to kids... he also manufactured the entire claim from the ground up using fake data for the sake of making money.

Every accusation that the anti-vaxers have been throwing at the medical community and pharmaceutical companies - but never been able to back up - comes flying back right in their faces like a Peter North cumshot.

Pot... you have been staring into the shiny polished surface of the copper kettle and calling it "black". You have been pwned by your own stupidity, so kindly fuck off... forever.
