Re: Would you support re-education camps for people who think differently than yourse
I'll answer this question honestly. Of course I would not support re-education camps and I do not have a problem with people of differing views (especially those who, though I do not agree with them, can at least argue and back up their position in an articulate fashion).
However, I believe there is a much simpler thing that can be done to take care of the poison that is the political discourse in America today...and that is by bringing back the so-called "equal time requirement" that was abolished by the FCC under Reagan & by going back to limiting the number of broadcast stations that one entity may own.
The REAL problem is the fact that so many political oriented programs are little more than a 1-3 hour monologue...giving the listener only one viewpoint is very dangerous...because it essentially has the ability to brainwash those who are unable to think for themselves (and God knows there are a ton of them). Having both viewpoints presented actually requires the listener to THINK....which is a beautiful thing. I mean, one such show actually has the callers calling in and saying "mega dittos"...shit there's nobody I agree with 100% of the time...and that too is a good thing!
Then like I said, you have companies such as Clear Channel Communications (A VERY conservative leaning company...the parent of Rush Limbaugh's show btw.) that own 1000+ radio and television stations in virtually every market in America. In the old days, broadcast stations were a public trust. Today, thanks to giants such as Clear Channel...listeners get fed the same slanted and opinionated views regardless of where they live. Clear Channel has an agenda (and trust me it is conservative), and they have a HUGE network in which to work to see it through. So, once again, the ability to get opposing views is once again curtailed. Getting all of one's information from essentially 1 source is also dangerous as it basically feeds it to you and does not require any thinking on the part of the listener.
In short, re-education (concentration) camps are not the solution...cleaning up the mess we have made of the broadcast landscape...on the other hand...that would be a very sensible thing to do.
