Been there, done that. I think I was wearing a Brooks and Dunn shirt at the last AC/DC show that I worked. AND I was seen wearing it by Malcolm Young, who kind of did a double take as he walked by.
One of my pet peeves as a stagehand is to see guys wearing a band's crew shirt from a previous year because they're doing the show that night. In San Jose that's like a fucking crew epidemic. "Doing Metallica? Well, I guess I'll wear my Metallica crew shirt from 8 years ago, and I'm sure 30 other guys will wear their Metallica shirts from other years!" Fucking posers.
When I'm working a show I go out of my way to wear something that's the complete opposite of what everyone will be wearing. I've worn Bonnie Raitt to Sisters of Mercy, Jonas Brothers to Black Label Society, Greatful Dead to Marylin Manson/Slayer, Britney Spears to Ozzfest, Godsmack to James Taylor, etc. Tonight, for instance, I'm working Billy Joel and Elton John and I'm wearing Kid Rock. My favorite was the time when I made a house pass (which normally has the name of the band and the date stamped on it) stamped "MOTHER FUCKER". Both Rob Zombie and Godsmack's bassist commented on my pass. Oh, and there was also the time when I wore a crew shirt that said, "Fuck off, I'm with the band" to a Mika show. The kids that saw it didn't know whether to cry in shock or run to their mommy.
