OK someone has put up a thread about Harry patch who in my opinion deserves more replies than Michael Jackson but when MJ died computers nearly crashed its very very wrong!!!!

One is a world war 1 hero lived his life and done his best for his country and new right from wrong , the other is just a controversial faded pop star

Who deserves more respect ? :glugglug:

Mr Patch and his late colleague Mr Allingham.

I got no time for celebrities. Not that I expect anyone to believe me when I say this, but, I was out having luncheon last Sunday and on the table next to us was Anthony Hopkins. Thank God he didn't ask for my autograph.

Walter Cronkite deserves more than eithier of them.I'm glad to see the media at least is paying a lot of attention to Cronkites legacy and life even if not much was paid here.

Cronkite my ass. It's very telling on the state of journalism in America when so much praise is heaped on one reporter come presenter.

Well:

One is a WWI war hero well known and respected in the United Kingdom.
The other is a contoversial - but GLOBAL one-time pop phenomenon.

Ergo, one would expect more response on MJ's passing.

If you want to dispute my analysis feel free...but that's my opinion....:2 cents:

PS: Harry Patch WAS the last British WWI vet until his death today...

I will take it your being serious lol.Cronkite was a CBS newsman/anchor for decades and was called the "most trusted man in america".He is remembered for his work during the Kennedy assasination, the space program and the vietnam war especially. When Cronkite said in 1968 we cannot win in vietnam and should get out the president at the time LBJ said if I have lost Cronkite I have lost america,Cronkite was that influential.

Change Harry to Hairy and it would be good one for a female with bush lol.

I see what you're saying Om3ga but somebody who applied himself to the fight for freedom and justice in a war, the like of which the world had never known nor has seen since, could arguably have played a bigger role globally and historically speaking.

If Walter put his neck on the line to put his story across then yes he deserves respect in this I mean was he there reporting the wrongs of America in Veitnam , from the front line but if he did it from the comfort of his studio then Im afraid sorry the answers no

Yes he went to vietnam and reported from there and then came back and said we should get out.Cronkite was not just a reader of news from a desk but often went to the scene.Cronkite BTW was a key player also in getting Israel and Eygptian leaders together which led to the only peace treaty ever between Israel and an arab country.

Then hell yes this guy deserves respect , a whole lot more than MJ

I would have him slightly lower than old Harry but yes I would say he deserves it , is he dead or alive?

As I understand it, Harry Patch refused to discuss his time in the Great War until 1998 when he agreed to take part in a BBC documentary on WWI vets.

And while the world had never seen anything like the the Great War, I think the effects of WW2 were more considerable...

In a sense WW2 was a continuation of WW1 (Clemenceau in 1918 said "It's a ceasefire , not peace , it will last for 20 years")

One surprising thing about Harry Patch is that he was severely wounded, spending a year in hospital , yet reached such a magnificent age.

If it wasnt for WW1 , WW2 would never have happened Hitler wanted to put Germany back on the map & show how great they were coming from the depression after WW1.
