As I understand it, Harry Patch refused to discuss his time in the Great War until 1998 when he agreed to take part in a BBC documentary on WWI vets.

And while the world had never seen anything like the the Great War, I think the effects of WW2 were more considerable...

Well, the numbers in WWII don't equal those of WWI, if we're talking statistics now. As for the WWII itself, I'm not sure why you think it's more considerable, it's certainly had a lot more devotion from Hollywood and there are of course other factors that came with it; higher-technology, genocide, ethnic cleansing etc,. (blueprints for future wars) WWI might have been more 'cleaner' or traditional i.e. Nationalist Country vs. Imperialist Country but it shouldn't be classed as lesser than WWII.

It was the single flashpoint that every other major event since has been born from. The recent 40th anniversary of the Moon Landing would never have happened if the Cold War hadn't happened, which in turn was the result of an allied victory in WWII, and which others have mentioned is directly connected to WWI. The state of Israel would not have been created >>Middle East problems would not have escalated in the way they have >> and thus 9/11 would have been avoided, meaning we wouldn't currently be in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Obviously it's all relative but WWI was definitely seismic.
