Well, all X-Box systems have the ability to connect, but there's no way to get free access, unless you get a trial.

keep dishing out the $50 a yr. buddy theres no other way. Its worth it though. Shayd? question, does microsoft have patents on xboxlive features that Sony cant use with PSn? As you know on psn you cant start private or party chats then bring them into the online games, you cant do invites while playing an online game to get your buds into the lobbies etc.

If they dont have it patented then where the hell is a firmware update for these features???? I refuse to believe Sony can do this stuff on ps3 but just hasnt gotten around to it yet.

Does anyone know how to get on XBOX LIVE for free?

You could steal a membership card from a store.

Steal someones wallet to pay for a card with your ill gotten goods.

You could stop being leaching scum and actually pay for it like the rest of us. Crazy thought. Ya know?

You have three options to get XBOX Live Gold. 1 month for $8.00, 3 months for $20.00, or 12 months for $50.00 and it's worth it so stop being cheap.

In fact just the other day on the dashboard, I saw an offer for gold for a month for £1. I already had a year paid for so didnt take much interest in it passed a glance at the big print.

(I deal enough with scrounging scum on a daily basis, so it frustrates me to see people begging for what they arent entitled to. Money, goods, basic human rights etc)

Did anyone ever notice this? I hate this.........this is the worst during a game of NHL09, the xboxlive pop-ups come on screen to tell you a friend logged in or a messg. was sent to you and it comes right up in front of your net if you play offense going up. It practically blocks 2/3 of the view of your defensive zone its terrible.

The thing about turning them off is that if you forget to turn them back on you can have 5 game match invites and not even know it cause nothing will notify you. Those pop-ups should have been minimized or redesigned by now in a dashboard update for my $50 a yr.

The dashboard itself ,in game, is slow as molasses when trying to send a quick messg. while pausing an online game.

Sorry to disappoint, but no, Microsoft doesn't. The only patents Microsoft have are for the dashboard implementation, and the like. The technology is free for Sony to use any time they want. The reason Sony hasn't implemented this yet is 100% the result of the technologies that each company employs. To make it a bit easier to understand, X-box Live essentially uses P2P technology to function, whereas Playstation Network uses a server based approach. Anyone who has ever programmed anything involving audio and video communication can tell you that a pseudo-P2P connection is far easier to effectively implement than a server based connection.

That's the one thing that EA messed up with NHL 09, was the Live announcement placement. This isn't really Microsofts fault though, because it's up to the devs to interface with Live, and EA has historically had problems with Live (see Madden).

Can you give me a name of those sites doppelganger?

NewEgg and Amazon often feature this deal. I've seen it on Buy.com and a few others. Google it and you'll find it.

nice info Shayd, ? when it comes to game lag/online smoothness in multiplayer games,is there a difference in quality between the p2p and the server based tech? Just assume its a standard quality broadband connection the gamer is using ala comcast. Nothing insane like verizon fios. I see no difference with NHL09 I had it for ps3 and 360.

Ea should be shot for the popups than, not microsoft!

Fuck yea there is. Just look at Gears of War (p2p) and CoD 4 & 5 (servers) Nuf said! p2p is garbage. And allows for a huge host advantage. I've heard there is also a "host advantage" with server based mp games, but its not as blatantly obvious and in your face.

I don't play sports games, but I'm sure the same holds true for them as well.

You know what bro, now that I think of it in NHL09 on 360 its so much easier for people to abuse the infamous "glitch goal" so they all call it,however on
ps3 if you toe-drag a wrist shot into the corner the goalie will have a good chance of snaggin' that pucker right out of the air. A toe-drag wrist shot on 360 goes in 95% of the time if you are good with the analog sticks and can roof a puck.

Does that have anything to do with the "host advantage" concept you brought forth?

The X-box implementation tends to be a bit smoother, but that varies from area to area. PSn is quite often suffer serious latency for seemingly because they haven't found an optimal way to connect to the servers.

Maybe. Does NHL09 use p2p or servers? Like I say I don't play sports games so I'm not 100% sure. With Gears the host advantage gives whoever is hosting the entire game a super shot gun. 1 shot kills all the time and from much farther away that normal. Also their regular weapon is much more powerful. While everyone elses seems to shoot bb's. Also the host's character moves slightly faster than everyone elses.

I guess in the case of NHL 09 it would depend on which team has the "host" on their team. Of course it could just be a glitch that is more prevalent in the 360 version.

All EA games run through EAs own servers. It's the reason why EA Sports games didn't have support for X-Box Live for so long. The reason for the glitches is just the latency of the EA servers.

Taking the games off for a couple hours in the middle of the night for EA server maintenance confirms that right?

Among other things yeah. The other dead giveaway is the fact that the latency is consistent among all of the games, whereas Microsoft servers are all over the place, so there's a great variance in the amount of latency.
