She is a Venezuelan professional Latin dance specialist and World Mambo Champion known for her appearances on the British TV series Strictly Come Dancing and the American TV series So You Think You Can Dance. She has also featured on Burn the Floor. Hauer participated in season 6 of So You Think You Can Dance and she joined Strictly Come Dancing for series 10 partnering Nicky Byrne. Karen was born in Valencia, Venezuela. At 8-years-old, she moved with her mother, brother and sister to New York. Her love of dancing started when she was chosen for a Dance program called Arts Connection at P.S.166, the public school she attended. At age 10, Karen was given a full scholarship to The Martha Graham School of contemporary dance where she learned her craft and continued to dance for the next 10 years. During this time she attended The High School of Performing Arts otherwise known as â€˜The Fame Schoolâ€™. Whilst there she majored in ballet and contemporary dance and received The Helen Tamaris Award for excellence in Dance. Aged 19, Karen was introduced to Latin dancing when she attended a cha-cha class. Sheâ€™s never looked back since. In the late noughties Karen picked up accolades including National Amateur American Rhythm Champion (2006-2007), World Mambo Champion (2008), Professional American Rhythm Rising Star Champion (2009) and Professional American Rhythm Grand Finalist Ohio Star Ball (2009). So You Think You Can Dance was Karenâ€™s next challenge where she reached the Top 12 in the showâ€™s sixth season in 2009. Whilst on the show she worked with choreographers Jason Gilkison, Melanie Lapatin, Tony Meredith, Napoleon and Tabitha, Wade Robson and Laurieann Gibson. She was also one of the back-up dancers for Jennifer Lopezâ€™s performance of â€˜Louboutinsâ€™ in December 2009. Following her success on So You Think You Can Dance, Karen joined the original Broadway cast of Burn The Floor at Longacre Theatre in 2009 as a Principal Female Dancer working once again with choreographer Jason Gilkison. She stayed with Burn The Floor on Broadway until 2010 before continuing her role in a world tour that took her to USA, Europe, UK, Asia, Australasia and South Africa. In autumn 2012 Karen joined BBC Oneâ€™s biggest show Strictly Come Dancing where she was partnered with former Westlife singer Nicky Byrne for her first season. They reached the ninth week of the competition. Currently Karen is touring the UK as part of the Strictly Come Dancing live tour where she is dancing with former Strictly contestant, and former cricketer, Phil Tufnell. In March Karen will be rejoining the cast of Burn The Floor along with her Strictly co-stars Robin Windsor and Kristina Rihanoff for a limited season at Shaftesbury Theatre in London.
