War, what is it good for?

Putin seems to think there's some value to it.
Looks like we're headed to Crimea Part 2 pretty soon. The question is, what is the rest of the world going to do about it?

No NATO country seems eager to commit, but if they don't do anything, putin will run roughshod through Ukraine and there goes any chance of them joining NATO.

Well, that was why I picked that as the thread title instead of "Russia stirring up shit again".

There's been several pre-emptive cyberattacks on several government agencies of NATO countries, and the buildup of 100K Russian forces along the border openly flaunted.
I don't think people are expecting WWIII or even a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, but a concentrated action in the very near future to take land like they did in Crimea is very real.

There is just one question that really matters. Does anybody think going through World War III to stop Putin is worth it if he really was that inclined to invade? If not, then no there isn't much that can be done. That's just reality.

Sure, there is always half-asses sanctions, but when's the last them that ever did anything significant against any major world power? They would be laughably weak, and the countries that would need to join them to even remotely be effective, like China, won't.

I'm not mindlessly isolationist, but for me I'm tired of the US being the world's policeman, and that goes even more so when most of the rest of the world doesn't care that much when it comes to it, and doesn't want to do things themselves to solve any problems. The US needs to start getting out of conflicts, get out of joining in them in the first place, or even worse starting them. We've meddled in too many things the last 75 years, and seldom if ever were they for altruistic reasons.

Leaders are being chased by the ghost of Neville Chamberlain. No one wants to be accused of being an appeaser.

A new war is unnecessary. We just left the Middle East and do not need to intervene elsewhere. Send equipment if necessary, but keep troops out of harm’s way.

.
My understanding is that the current goal is much smaller - it's whether military intervention is worth having Ukraine as a NATO member. putin is doing this to show how ineffective NATO is to protect their own members - and getting them to join him instead. If he even takes over a small part of Ukraine and NATO does nothing, he can say "See, they don't care about you, but daddy putin loves you!".

The borders between East and West will always be prone to war, as either side pushes to gain ground

what the fuck you lookin at?
Why does it matter if russia invades ukrane? Why do we care about ukrane? Second, the fuck is that blathering idiot in the white house actually gonna do? I guess the military industrial complex needs a war soon. They've got to be running low on funds by now. It's been awhile.

Off the top, it means that we're devolving back to a time where countries can just invade others to take over them. If Russia gets away with this, imagine what China would do with Taiwan?

And on that note, looks like even outside of Ukraine, Russia is currently looking to expand. Gotland would certainly be an attractive prize for him.

I feel like we should be preserving our own interests rather than playing world police.

In a bell tower, watching you through cross hairs.
That's what Edwin Starr said in 1970.

I'm a little surprised you didn't seize the opportunity to quote the lyrics, BEFORE the commentary.

"HUH, ABSOLUTLY NOTHIN', SAY IT AGAIN!"

US troops to deploy to Eastern Europe amid Ukraine crisis
https://www.cnn.com/2022/02/02/politics/us-troops-europe-russia/index.html

Biden has formally approved the deployment of 3,000 US troops to Poland, Germany and Romania,
But notably not Ukraine itself. Plus, what are 3K troops going to do against 100K who are already dug in?

I get that sending a huge contingent would only play into putin's narrative that the west is the upping the ante, but I question the rationale behind this.

He's just doing a little bicep flexing. He can't puff his chest out, but he can't go run and hid either. I can't help but wonder if Putin is doing this as a favor....or a pay-off from his buddy Vlad. Plus, he's poking his nose into China's shit, and he can't spread things to thin. Besides, how far is Russia gonna go? they've already had their little dance with Afghanistan, and they sure as hell aren't gonna try and get back to the pre wall days. Putin is fucking with Biden...he might even be doing it for China....My enemies, enemy, is my friend.

Putin's not dumb. He knows Europe and the US won't EVER engage in a real military conflict with Russia, that they're gonna stick up to economic sanctions. And he knows some nations in NATO cannot afford to go too hard on Russia 'cause they need russian gas...
The stakes may seem very high and it may seem he's pulling a very risky move but the thing is he knows the other guy has nothing but a pair of twos

Also I heard that, while everyone's looking at Ukraine, the Wagner Group, a paramilitary organisation owned by Yevgeny Prigozhin (a friend of Putin) is conducting operations in Africa, particulary Mali (Which is in the hand of a military junta looking to get rid of the western troops in the country (who were sent there by the UN to fight jihadis). In exchange Mali government is selling part of its natural ressources (including Uranium) to Russia

Although not war related(economically maybe) I don't see why Cuba doesn't cuddle up to China and the Bridges and Roads project. They are not in great shape and America doesn't seem to be interested in returning to Obama's opening plan. Makes me wonder why not. They kissed Russia's ass for years and were dropped as a reward during the break up.
