American football question?

My wife doesn't know I'm a perv!
It has nothing to do with the sport, it's the country. In the USA we list the home team second because it is The Away Team at The Home Team. Even in soccer, we list the home team second. Meanwhile, basketball games in Europe I believe list the home team first, while in the USA it's the away team first which proves it depends on the region of the world, not the sport.

Other differences here in America are saying 'Tie' instead of 'Draw'. A tie here is a draw, but in Europe it means a match-up. We also list team's records (this one I don't understand) as Wins-Losses-Ties rather than Wins-Draws-Losses. Here, as in places such as Australia and a select few countries in Europe, championships are determined by a playoff, sharply reducing the importance of the season. We utilize entry drafts instead of youth academies, and most sports have a salary cap which restricts spending by each team. Players are not sold between clubs, instead they are traded for each other, which the English would refer to as a 'swap deal'. Baseball, unlike Japan, plays extra innings to avoid ties. Soccer here also used to play all games to a penalty shootout if it remained tied so as to avoid draws. Americans are not to fond of any game in any sport that does not result in a determined winner.

I understand the stuff in the stands, our college football's alot like that. But we'll get news reports from over there of a team winning, or losing, and their fans out in the streets, setting fires, breaking windows, stealing, spray painting graffiti, and other things way beyond the significance of any game in any sport, leading to police in riot gear with fire hoses.
I don't think i have ever seen that
That never happens, maybe in hollonad and places like that. But never in every country

Works for panties
Actually football has a lot more tactics than you may think. Not every player runs up and down the field. Every player has a set position and they stick to it as much as possible. A team's centre backs will rarely go up the field and it's the same with the strikers, it is not their job to defend. They do on occasion but that is it. There are hundreds of ways a manager can set the team up to play. You could play defensively and try not to concede a goal or you could go all out attack to try and score. There are lods of formations you could use. You could have a 4-4-2. The number furthest to the left is the defenders, the middle the midfielders and the number on the right is the strikers. So there are many of these you could choose, as long as they add up to 11( the galkeeper has to be there, so they make up the 11 at the end). You could go 5-3-2, so you have more defenders. Or you could go for a 4-5-1, where you put in more midfielders. You could choose any combination as long as it adds up to 10, therefore a lot of thought has to go in to setting up your team. Especially when the oppostition varies in different skills and strengths/weaknesses etc.

Some teams will defend and then go on the counter attack whereas others will just attack from the start.

Many Americans believe that it is just 11 players chasing a ball up and down a pitch. But really a lot of thought goes into it. If you look at Barcelona for example(on youtube etc), their players hardly run at all, they just pass thorugh the other team in triangles. Every players movement is so good that they never have to run about. Other teams will just hit a ball and try and get it to the strikers(teams tend to do this if they are losing with not much time left). So it is not just guys running up and down all day, it has intricate and fluid movement and loads of tactics.

I don't guess we play a slightly different version of soccer than you guys, because there certainly seems to be a bunch of everyone but the goalie running up and down the field over here, and no one but the goalie staying put or in a certain area.

I know I wasn't having the discussion about team nicknames with you, but something just struck me when you said go look at Barcelona. I think the reason you guys don't have team nicknames is because you assume soccer/football. (I know you've got other sports over there, but soccer's the big one.) We don't. We don't assume any sport, and need the team's nickname to know which team is being talked about, especially since just about every major city has professional and college football, baseball, hockey, soccer, and basketball teams, and sometimes more than one and their seasons overlap. So just saying City A is playing City B doesn't tell us much, but tells you guys plenty.

I have never watched a full game of American football in my life but i am watching it just now on ESPN and ESPN America. It is 8:45 here, don't know what time it is there though

The show is called Missouri at Kansas State

So why is it stated as Missouri 0 Kansas st 0

The other match is Florida at LSU
It says Florida 0 LSU 7, but LSU are the home team

Should it not be the home team that is stated first. That is what they normally do in normal football.
I.e if celtic are at home to rangers it would say
Celt 0 Ran 0 on the tv

Why have they put it the other way around for American football

Also it says live CFB, is that college football?

:surprise:

I've been watching American football for many years and I've never noticed.
I don't think it matters either way. :2 cents:

Look....you're a decent enough fellow here most of the time, BMH. However, people tend to take it personally when you refer to their customs as "stupid". You deserve every bit of flak you are getting from us Yanks about this as a result of your extremely poor choice of words. Next time you have a question about our customs, I suggest you show the courtesy of simply asking why instead of being prejudicial.

By the way, I couldn't give a shit less which side of the road you Brits drive on or what order you place teams playing soccer on the scoreboard. That's the way you do it....we do it differently. Doesn't make either one of us "stupid"....just different.

:goodpost:

Americans just need to remember when writing the date it's day, month then year and not the other way round. ;)

Will strip for money!

I just watched a game of football in America(not American football) and the teams are the right way around. It says L.A Galaxy vs Chvas USA and it had LA Galaxy on the left. Where it should be

I'm too lazy to set a usertitle.
That game you call football over there is nothing but a bunch of grass fairies running around trying to kick a ball into a net.

No shit. Still screws me up every time, and I've been here a decade.

I thought the yanks put the year first like here on freeones. :dunno:

I say we Brits wait for America to declare war on Iran or China, then invade America and reclaim what was ours. Then we can rid the world of all Americanisms. Only Jim Carrey will remain untouched. :elaugh:

Worse decision America ever made was gaining independence from Britain, unfortunately even if we took them back they've had hundreds of years of going in the wrong direction so they are too far gone for us to salvage anything........... I mean Month/Date/Year :wtf:

Why do you have so little games in the season?

In the SPL we play 38 games plus cup games and sometimes Europe

In the EPL there are about the same, and again plus cup and europe.

It is better when you see more games

Because it would be basically impossible to field a team for 38 games because of the amount of injuries that take place. There are stars getting concussions, ankles, back, hamstring, broken bones, ACL/MCL injuries constantly.

I played soccer and American football and there were waaay more severe injuries in the latter.
