I heard the Dodgers won the baseball match against the Tampa organization this week. I live in Los Angeles so I say good and go Dodgers. I'll check next month to see what happened.

Dodgers up 7-6 going into the bottom of the ninth. Gave up two runs. Tampa Bay wins 8-7. Series now tied up 2-2.

Dodgers really suck.

The ending to game 4 was like watching little leaguers. The Dodgers redeemed themselves last night and can finish tomorrow tonight. Why the Rays tried to steal home is beyond comprehension. If course, if he's safe they are geniuses.

I learned something about myself this postseason. I hate the Braves more than a team from Florida. My dislike of all teams (regardless of sport) Florida was suspended for this series (and the earlier Marlins - Braves series).

Yes, the LAD did it. Broke a 32 year drought. 3-1 over the Rays. In 2022, you also get the All Star Game too.

Now that the baseball season is over. There are four new rule changes that I don't want MLB to initiate during the regular season and post season.

1. Putting a man at second base in extra innings with nobody out at the start of each inning that is played in extra innings. A groundout to the right side of the infield gets the runner to third base. A sacrifice fly allows him to score. The other (home) team has their chances but if they don't score the visiting team wins the game. As Ernie Banks used to say, "let them play two." He loved doubleheaders, but sometimes extra innings can go eighteen innings or more. This is just not right.
2. Speaking of doubleheaders, having a doubleheader for a makeup game is all right. But making them seven innings? We're not playing softball here. That is not acceptable
3. Having a designated hitter in the National League. I'm a purist and that limits the manager's ideas and strategy later in the game. Let the pitchers get up to bat.
4. Adding two more teams for post season. Commissioner Manfred is doing this to make games at the end of the season more exciting and enjoyable especially if your city's team is on the cusp of making the playoffs What is this? The NHL where almost all the teams make it? No. Not acceptable. Stick with the three division winners and the two wild card teams for a play in game. The winner of the wild card play in game then plays the number one seed. I'd like to see everything played with a seven game series. But then, we'd be playing baseball coming into November. That wouldn't be good. The other way, would allow for the teams to play more doubleheaders. Get the regular season done quicker. But that would not sit well with the Major League Baseball Players Association.

All of these changes that Commissioner Manfred is making is to get the leagues to speed up games and to get them more uniform to each league.

If the MLBPA goes along with Commissioner Manfred's interpretation of these new rules, baseball is going to lose many more fans than what the Pandemic has done. Baseball is already watered down with what a manager can do. I'm talking about the "relief pitcher" rule that went into effect last year. A manager cannot take a relief pitcher out of the game until he faces three batters or the relief pitcher throws ten pitches. That now limits the role of a relief specialist. Again a baseball season is one long hard arduous journey. A hundred and sixty two game season along with playoff games too. It's like that for a reason. Don't allow the Commissioner to ruin it by what he thinks is best for the game.

Very good takes. I am a traditionalist as well, but the game does need some change.
  1. The extra-inning rule is good as it helps speed up the conclusion. As the game drags on past 9 innings, the quality of play diminishes. Fans leave or turn off the TV so the viewership is limited until the morning-after replays.
  2. Completely agree. Schedule 9 each game!
  3. The DH is a conflict for me since I'm a life-long NL guy. That said, I can't say I missed the pitcher batting this year.
  4. Returning to the 2019 playoff format would be good - including keeping the 5-game series for the Divisional Series. [Hockey could learn something with shortening series. It's the same core group playing each game - why 7 in the early rounds? It's not like there are 4 goalies in the rotation.]
I like the rule limiting reliever changes although it eliminates the LOOGY. Now that pitchers don't routinely go 7 innings, something needed to be done.

Shortening the season so it's over by early- to mid-October would be a place to start. Too many teams play meaningless games in September, while the important games are played in frigid late-October weather. And why start the games at 8 ET? What's wrong with 7 or earlier? It's moot for me since one benefit of living in Mountain Time is that eastern games typically end around 10 (and my teams play in ET).

How did you feel about the neutral-site games?

My team is at 41 with no end in sight.
Pirates, huh? Had your shot when Barry Bonds was there. (Braves beat you twice in 1991 and 1992) Also when Gerrit Cole was there. (Cardinals beat you in the NLDS in 2013. Giants beat you in 2014 in the Wild Card play-in game. Then Cubs beat you the next year in 2015 also in the Wild Card play-in game.) 2014 was unfortunate because you were trying to catch the Cardinals and used both Francisco Liriano and Cole in those last two games of the season that they lost. While the Cardinals took two of three against the Diamondbacks. Then Madison Bumgarner pitched a shutout and Brandon Crawford hit a grand slam off Edinson Volquez.

Madison Bumgarner had a great postseason. I was very happy being a SFG fan. They won three World Series in five years.

Both Jim Leyland and Clint Hurdle were very good managers.

No need to remind me of 1991 and 1992. It was the starting point of this:
I hate the Braves more than a team from Florida.
I was at the '91 not-so-happy ending and was watching the '92 ending on TV. Ugh. Those were great years and they should have won at least one Series with their core.

Their best recent chance was when they were up 2-1 on the Cards in 2013 before losing games 4 and 5. The 2015 wild card game was deflating - especially with the crowd getting so quiet.

Fortunately, I was able to attend games 4 and 5 of the '79 series. Since then, my hockey and football teams make up for it.

And the Staten Island Yankees (formerly the New York Yankees Class A short season affiliate in the New York-Penn League) have ceased operations. And they are now suing both the New York Yankees and Major League Baseball for $20 million since Major League Baseball realigned their minor league club affiliates last month. Baseball teams, like the Yankees had 160 clubs under their control. MLB's realignment last month reduces the amount of clubs a team can control down to 120. The New York Yankees dropped the Staten Island club as a result.
